D0 I920 and Gigabyte EX58 UD5 issues.

It's great. Had it running at 4.2GHz for a while and it was sound, and pretty quick! I'm going to have to save up and get an SSD or two I think. I have two WD Velociraptors (raid0) and they are much quicker than the old Raptors, but I think SSD's would make it nice and quick :)
Just a pity I have no money!

Paul, I'm thinking about doing the same thing, and i'm in the same position as you now, no money! I think I'll wait until the price of SSDs comes down and you can get an 80GB for a decent price. These new Raptors (Veloci) are much better than the old ones aren't they? Much quieter too.

Yeah, I want to get myself an SSD or 2 for my OS, but I am getting my case mods done and my parts for custom WC first.

I am using 2 x 36GB Raptors in RAID0 for my OS atm, which will do me fine for a while yet.

This is actually the first time I have had a RAID array in my system, so it is still quite fast compared to the single drive I was using before.

The only thing I don't like is the fact that I don't know what to do if 1 drive fails, it has happened to me already because I was o/cing, and used bad settings, so I had to clear CMOS, and I forgot to enable RAID mode in my BIOS, so when I tried to boot into Windows, it looked for my OS on one of the drives as it wasn't in RAID mode, and I got an error obviously, so I thought it would just be case of resetting my rig, and enabling RAID mode, and everything would be fine, but that wasn't the case!!

I tried searching around online to see if I could get it back up and running without losing my data, but I couldn't find anything at all, so I ended up having to recreate the array and reinstall Win7 again.

I don't suppose you know if there is anyway to get a failed drive back again without losing anything?

btw i had an informal confirmation that i *should* be getting a Megahalem with suitable fans (no idea which) sent to me, maybe even arrive tomorrow although more likely next week (not received any e-mails about it). can't wait to see how it affects these temps so I can return the Noctua once and for all.

Have you considered RAID 5 DavyBoy?

You would obviously need at least one more drive but it helps eliminate the risk involved with RAID 0 but with most of the benefits.

I've had a few boot errors but I just set the bios to what it previously was (regarding the drives, obviously!) and it's booted ok. I've never lost a drive or data (touch wood). As long as you don't change anything in the raid bios/setup thingy I would have thought it would be ok.

@Plec, I have only started messing around with RAID arrays, so I hvae only tested these 2 raptors in RAID0.

I will have a read later today about RAID5 to see how that could benefit me.

I was up til 4AM this morning putting all my hardware back inside the case, I spent ages trying to figure out the best way to manage all my cables, but it still isn't 100% due to the design of my case, but I will be ripping it all apart again soon to have the work done to my case, so it will have to do for now.

I don't think I did to bad of a job really, it is a lot better than it was the last time I had everything inside the case.

I'll get some pics of my rig up here later on for you guys to see.

It was left running Prime95 Blend Test last night with the 4GHz o/c and it was still going this morning, I only just stopped the test 5 minutes ago, and it does 20 passes of LinX using all available RAM to, so I would say this is stable.

@mothermachine, that's good to hear you will be getting the Megahalems as a replacement for your Noctua, it will perform a lot better I should think. Hopefully they give you a couple of Akasa Apache's to hook up to the heatsink, those fans are supposed to be amazing.

Here are some snaps of my rig as promised earlier, please excuse my poor photography guys!!!

Cable management isn't really up to scratch, but it was the best that I could manage, and it will all be getting torn apart soon to have the work done to my case anyway..

This was an epic thread I bow to your perseverance. I am so glad that you got everything working :D, you also have given me valuable knowledge.

Nice case and the photography is good! good luck with your future builds!

I am glad to that I finally have a working rig mate!!!

The stress this caused me was insane.. there were many occasions where I felt like take a hammer to this thing and just giving up altogether, but with the help of Plec and the others who posted here made me manage to hold everything together and to finally get to the bottom of the problem.

I can't wait to get the mods done to my case and get my chip and GPU under water.

I have managed to pickup an EK GTX280 waterblock and backplate from the members market for £35, so I have made a start to purchasing my parts for the WC loop, this will be the first time I have tried water cooling, I just hope that everything goes smoothly, and I don't run into any issues with that!!!
