D0 I920 and Gigabyte EX58 UD5 issues.

Hi Plec,

When the mobo comes, I will set it up and hope that the issues get resolved... if it does sort out the problems, I will ship off the current UD5 and 1 of my sets of RAM to Gigabyte and explain to them EVERYTHING that I have tried, and all of the issues I am experiencing, and just hope that they can replicate the problems at their end...

If however, the new mobo doesn't make any difference, then I am going to assume that it is my CPU that is faulty, so I will have to return that to OcUK again, but this time make sure they test it thoroughly, over the course of a few days if possible...

You know, after all the years I have been building, repairing and overclocking PC's I NEVER thought that I could experience anything like this, but how wrong was I?!?!

This system has made me feel like a total n00b... it really has!!!

well, the new board didn't come today... even though the seller paid for next day delivery...

However, I have spent the entire day testing out my rig with only two sticks of RAM installed, and it has been perfect!!!

It can do 20 passes of IBT no problem at all, but if I have a stick fitted into the dodgy slot it crashes after 1 pass of IBT...

I have also ran a couple of hours of Blend test in Prime95 without any issues several times today as well...

I just hope that it is the mobo that is dodgy and not my processors IMC... guess i will find out tommorow when the new mobo arrives...

It is about time i got a result with this rig, after all the money I have pumped into it.. though at least now I only need to get the processor to complete my 2nd i7 build!!!

And with all the trouble I have had with this system, I feel that I have gotten to know a little bit about X58/i7 platform... so it isn't all bad at the end of the day!!!

Instead of getting an OEM processor I will buy a retail one this time, as I can use the hsf for my fiancees rig because she wont be doing any overclocking on hers so a stock cooler will be fine...

Sorry guys, I have been in hospital since last Friday with a pneumothorax (collapsed lung) so I didn't get a chance to test out my new mobo yet...

But I am back home now, so I will have a go with the new mobo later this evening..

There are some very slight differences with this new board, nothing major, but some of the capacitors beside the PCI e slots are smaller in size to the ones on my mobo...

Anyway, I will post back in here once I have tested the new board..

Well, new mobo is setup, and still only 2 out of 3 sticks of RAM is being recognized!!!

I guess it is the CPU afterall,,, which was what I had suspected from the beginning!!!

That was why I RMA'd the CPU to OcUK first, but it wasn't thoroughly tested by the techs for any issues to showup..

I suppose it is RMA time again for my processor... what a complete PITA...

I now have enough gear for 2 i7 builds minus a processor, and it doesn't even work properly...

Is OEM chips different than retail ones??

I will get a retail 920 next to complete my fiancees build, but I want a replacement chip for my own rig first!!!

Good to hear you have sorted out your problem Paul... I wish that it was a bent pin that was the cause of the problems that I am having... but I have checked the socket a billion times for bent pins, and there are none in sight...

I am extremely angry to say the least.. I just want a working system!!!

It seems like I am just doomed, because bad things always happen to me...

As for the collapsed lung, I dunno how it happened man, I was sitting here tinkering with my rig, and I stood up to go get a drink, and I felt a stabbing pain in the left side of my chest, I thought I had pulled something to begin with, but the pain got steadily worse to the point where I could barely move, and I was finding it really difficult to breathe, so I asked my missus to call the Dr, and she explained to them what was wrong with me, and te Doc came to my house to check me out...

Then he told me that I needed to go to AMAU ward to have a chest x-ray, as he thought that it might have been a blood clot in my lung...

So I had the x-ray done and they told me that my lung had completely collapsed!!!

I hate hospitals, and that was the first time I have ever had to spend time in one since I was about 6 years old... I was in for 6 days in total, as I had to have a chest drain put in to release the air from my chest cavity to allow my lung to reinflate... I was really scared tbh!!!!

But I am all better now thank god...

It was probably all the stress that this PC has caused me that made my lung collapse!!!!

I'm late to the thread but what bios/memory settings are you using?

1600mhz memory is not officially supported, just because some memory manufacturer sold you 1600mhz memory doesn't change the fact that Intel i7 only officially supports up to 1333mhz memory, if you do try to run memory at 1600mhz then it is considered overclocking because you are pushing the CPU beyond specification (remember the memory controller is built into the CPU now so just because your motherboard and memory support 1600mhz doesn't mean the CPU will be happy with it).

I have just replaced my 920 c1 with a d0 and replaced memory too and I've still been getting the occasional 4088MB bug with a P6T mobo when trying out agressive overclocks (only 4088MB is detected during post), that leaves just the motherboard which hasn't changed but I believe the issue is caused by too aggressive memory timings at high memory speeds (~1600mhz), I guess the memory controller just isn't happy.

Hi,

I have tried loads of different BIOS configs with this rig... And nothing works man.. I have tried absolutely everything!!!

I have tried with the RAM at 1066, 1333, 1600MHz, nothing works!!!!

It used to recognize all 3 modules when I first set it up, but one day it just decided to stop working... and it does this with 2 different sets of RAM btw..

I have tried the looser timings man, I tried 9-9-9-26, and 10-10-10-28 and at 1066, 1333, and 1600MHz and nothing works..

I also thought it could be my HSF that was to tight, so I loosened it up to see if that helped but it didn't...

The thing is, the load plate for the cpu socket is extremely tight when I push the bar down, so I don't think that it would really matter how tight I had my HSF fitted because nothing could put anymore pressure on top of the CPU than the load plate already does...

Is the load plate supposed to be tight like this?

It's like this on both of my boards...

And as for the bent pins, I have looked at the socket a billion times on both boards to check for bent pins, and there are none in sight... I wish that it was just a bent pin that was the cause of all these problems!!!!

What can I use to clean the contacts and cpu socket pins??

tbh, I would be to afraid to touch the socket pins in fear of snapping them!!!

But I would have a bash at cleaning the contacts on the processor if you could tell me what I should use to clean them?

hmmm, wouldn't water leave residue on the cpu contacts and socket pins?

I think I will give this a miss tbh, as I have just came off the phone to OcUK technical help, and they have issued an RMA number for my processor...

Like I said, I am fairly positive that it is the CPU that is bricked now, it was the first thing that I suspected back when I put this system together, but the problems were intermittent back then, and it would also see all three sticks of RAM as well, but these problems have got steadily worse over time, so now when I return the processor they should pickup on all the problems I am experiencing and send me out a replacement which should cure all of these problems...

Once I get another i920 I am going to sell one of these builds on, and get myself a Phenom II 955 system instead... I wish that I had just build a PhenomII rig first instead of jumping over to Intel, because I always used AMD chips in the past, and I have never had 1 single bad experience with them.. but the first time I move over to Intel I am plagued with problems from day 1...

Though hopefully with a replacement processor all these issues will be cured.. the guy who I talked to on the telephone earlier told me that they have had a couple of people with the same problem as me with i7 systems, and that it has been the processors IMC that has been the cause of the problems...

I will get the CPU shipped off on Monday, I will keep you guys posted as to the progress...

Hey guys, I only got around to shipping my processor off at the beginning of this week, so I am still waiting to see what the tech guys say about it all..

I contacted people at Intel and told them about the problems I have been experiencing with my rig, and about all the different testing that I have done myself, and they also said that it more than likely is the IMC on the CPU that is damaged..

I will be extremely frustrated though if it works fine for the guy that tests it though!!!

I am fairly confident that it is the processor that is faulty, but this waiting game isn't fun at all.. as I can't help but think the worst all of the time!!!

It has been really helpful having you around though Plec, you have been with me all the way through this crap, and I really appreciate that a lot..

But hopefully this will be the last of it all now...

I will be sure to let you know what happens as soon as I find out myself man..

As for the pneumothorax, I am feeling a lot better now, although I am really scared to cough, or take deep breaths in fear of it happening again... this is the second time my lung has collapsed, the first time was about 4 years ago, and I never bothered going to the Dr or A&E, I was in pain for about a week, but I just thought that I had pulled something, I don't think it had completely collapsed the first time, but it was the same type of pain..

I wasn't going to bother calling the Dr this time neither, but it kept getting worse to the point that I couldn't take it anymore, when I got to A&E and had it x-rayed, my lung was completely deflated...

It was a relief to get told what was happening though, before I was told what it was that was wrong with me, I thought that I was dying or something... not good at all!!!!

Well, if you are out there Plec, I thought you might be inerested in an update on my situation??

I returned my previous CPU to OcUK, and they tested it and they never found any faults with it, but I had explained to one of the techs about all the testing I had done myself, and also told him about all the new hardware I bought in an attempt to find out what was causing the issues..

So he went ahead and sent me a replacement chip anyway, so it arrived today, and I have just finished rebuilding my rig, and what would you know???

Everything is sorted!!! :D

All 6GB is being detected again!!

Needless to say I am absolutely delighted about this.. and not only that, the chip that I got given was a full retail chip when my previous one was just OEM!!

So that means I now have a 3 year warranty with Intel!!! :D

I will get some proper stress testing done later on.. and I will also try clocking it up as well at some point...

Thanks again mate for being with me through this whole nightmare of a situation, lets just hope that this is the end of it all for me... :)

Thanks guys.. though I am a little bit gutted at the same time, because I can't for the life of me get a stable 4GHz o/c... I tried using the settings I used with my last processor for a stable 4GHz o/c, and it crashed within a couple of minutes, so I have played around with Vcore and QPI/Vtt to see if raising those will give me a stable o/c but it is a no go so far..

Also my temps are through the roof as well.. which is really strange, because I was using my old Zalman 9700NT with my last processor, and the hottest core would be 84c, but with this processor I am using a TRUE with 2 fans, and the hottest core is hitting 92c!!!

So I am a little dissapointed to say the least... especially when you see all these other guys hitting 4+GHz with ease... :(

I need to figure out why the temps are so hot though, something just isn't right at all... :(

I don't give up to easily.. I will spend the entire weekend trying to get this thing stable @ 4GHz... Once I am there I will be happy!!

I am gonna install Win7 on my Raptors I have setup in RAID0, because I have heard lots of good things about Win7 so I want to try it out for myself..

Thanks for the kind words guys, and also a huuuge thank you to Plec for being with me throughout this whole thread.

You kept me from losing my mind over this problem, and I can't thank you enough for this my friend! ;)

About the new CPU, it just doesn't want to go any further than 3.8GHz no matter what I do.

There is something quite not right about this chip, I have tested it with 4 different coolers (stock, 2 TRUE's, and my Zalman) and with every single cooler the idle temps at stock are sitting at 53c, and it shoots up to 80c under load, now my previous chip would idle at 34c, and hit 61c under load, so as you can see there is something not right with it.

I have used up half a tube of AS5 from reapplying paste and reseating my coolers just incase it was a bad mount that was causing this, but nothing I do makes a blind bit of difference to these temps.

To begin with I'd suspected that the IHS was warped and wasn't making a proper contact with the base of my heatsinks, but I checked it with a straight edge and it looks fine to me, but someone else on XS mentioned something about it being a leaky CPU, I don't fully understand what he meant, but for those who are interested they can read the post here.

I have it @ 3.8GHz with only 1.216v Vcore and 1.280v QPI, so the temps shouldn't be as high as what they are.

My last chip idled @ 46c when it was clocked to 4GHz using 1.264v Vcore and 1.355v QPI, and it would hit 84c under load, but this chip at 3.8v has the exact same idle temp as it does at stock frequency, but it hits 92c under full load with a TRUE with push/pull fans!!

And like I said, it isn't a bad mount because I have tested 4 different coolers, and each one gives me roughly the same temps.

Anyway, I will be picking up another chip in the next couple of weeks for my 2nd build, so heres hoping I get a nice one.

Thanks again for the kind words guys.

Oh, almost forgot, @ mothermachine, do you know the batch number of your chip?

It will be on the box it came in, if you don't have the box anymore, it is also written on the IHS, my one is 3910A***, maybe your chip has the same problem as this one I have, the temps are ridiculous, and especially when I compare them to the temps of my previous chip.

@ mothermachine, yeah, the first batches were the best ones.

Seems a bit strange that they didn't want you to send your Noctua as it could very well be something to do with the base of your heatsink that is causing your high temps, and those high temps could be the cause of instability.

I wish that I still had my first chip tbh, because it was a brilliant clocker, and the temps were really low on that chip compared to this replacement one, it was batch number 3851A228.

But as I said, I will be picking up another chip in the next couple of weeks, so hopefully I get a nice one.

I don't know where I am going to purchase it from though, I think that I might go through to Aberdeen and buy it so that I can go round a few stores and ask them to check the batch numbers for me so that I can try and find one from a nice batch instead of just taking a gamble with online retailers.

@Jon, nah mate, this is still the chip they sent me as a replacement for the first one I shipped back, I haven't got round to shipping it back yet as I haven't had the funds because I had to pay bills this week, I will be sending it back tomorrow, so I should have another one by the end of the week to play around with.

Like I said though, the next one I buy for my 2nd rig will be purchased from a shop instead of e-tailers.

I wish that OcUK would start selling 920's that are guaranteed to do 4GHz like they used to do with the Q6600's, I am sure lots of people would be buying them up if they did this.

Hi guys,

@ Paul, yeah mate, I have tried using Turbo Boost in the BIOS for the 21x multiplier, this was the first thing I tried for 4GHz as this is how I hit 4GHz with my previous chip, and I tested Vcore right up to 1.35v and QPI to 1.360v, and it just buckles after a few minutes of LinX.

I don't think putting this chip under water would make a blind bit of difference tbh guys.

But it's all sorted anyway, I will explain in more detail at a later date! :)

I have actually been toying with the idea of setting up a custom water cooling loop for quite a while now, but I have just been to busy buying other hardware that I haven't had the spare cash to start buying the gear to set it up.

I was actually going to send you an e-mail Jon with the list of equipment that I plan on buying from a competitors site for my loop, I will get on it later today and run it past you first to see what you think if that is ok with you?

I will be picking up my 2nd chip sooner than I had expected, I should have the funds to go get it on Wednesday, so I am really looking forward to that! :D

Thanks again for all the help and kind words guys, I really appreciate all the help. :)

Good to hear they got it all sorted for you mate. ;)

Let us know how you get on with it once you get it back home.

::edit::

Just a word of warning, your sig can only have 4 lines of text in it ;)

Just a quick post to let you guys know that the chaps at OcUK have kindly replaced my processor for me!!! :D

I have also ordered another 920 D0 to complete my 2nd i7 system as well, they will both arrive here tomorrow, I just hope to god that I get 2 nice ones this time, and I also hope that this will be the end of all my problems with this rig!!!

I'm going to be sending my TJ10 off to have the roof modded to fit a 120.3 rad, some holes cut into the mobo tray for cable routing and one behind the heatsink backplate so that I don't have to take the mobo out to change the HSF, and I'm getting all the inside powder coated in red as well!!

Should be getting all my parts for a custom WC loop either at the end of next next month, or the beginning of October, I will just have to wait and see.

I'll make a thread on here once I get all my case mods and watercooling parts so that you guys can check it out, no doubt I will have to post a lot on here as well for help with the watercooling side of things because this will be my first go at it, and I don't really know anything about it as yet, although I have been reading up quite a lot, and Jon has helped me out with some bits and bobs as well which has been really kind of him. :)

Thanks again though to everyone that has been here for me in this thread, especially you Plec!

I will be sure to let you know how I get on with my new processors tomorrow.
