D600 with full fat AF system!

I think they are talking about the 5DMKIII the D600 had been reported to be about $1500-1800, somewhere in the 1200-1500GBP range.

Makes me wonder if we're actually going to see an official replacement for the D300s or if it'll just be quietly put out to pasture. It's really is very overdue now. If they're still selling it when the D7000 replacement lands it's going to look ridiculous.

I've only been doing this (photography) for a few weeks, and I'm actually excited. I start a new job in September.. this just might have to be my "Congrats on the new job!" present, to myself. From myself. :D

You're a very good friend to yourself. You should take yourself out for a drink and a nice meal, maybe book a nice hotel out in the country :D

There was a bit I was going to add on the end, but the mods may ban me :D

For many people the D7000 was the D300s replacement, except those that needed the highest buffer speed and state of the art AF, some of which migrated to a D700.

The D300s replacement was delayed due to the Thailand floods. It is also not an obvious camera to replace. A D400 would likely be much the same D300s body with either the 16MP D7k sensor or the 24MP D3200 sensor. If they used the D7K sensor then the camera would basically be a D7K with a bit more buffer/speed/AF capabilities and would be hard to justify.

The 24MP D3200 sensor combined with the latest generation AF system would make for an excellent wildlife and sports camera with tangible benefits over a D800 (basically increased pixel density and thus subject image sizes).

The D600 doesn't really replace the D300. Pixel density will be lower, burst speed likely slower.D800 gives the pixel density improvement desired, but is not a speed daemon.

Out of interest, are you going to buy one of these or a D800, or will it boil down to price vs features over what you currently have mate?

I'm conflicted, but I think I have a plan.

At some point I want to have 3 bodies, 2 for weddings, and 1 for personal/backup.
D800E's are too expensive for me at the moment as I would have to buy 2.
Also ideally I want to shed some weight, as carrying all that weight for 10+ hours at a wedding begins to take it's toll.

So I'm thinking of trading in my D700's for D600's (pending reviews), to use for weddings. And then saving up for a while to get a D800E. I plan to use the D800E for landscapes and studio type photography. If I drop the D800 in the sea, it doesn't mess up my wedding business at the weekend.

I'm looking forward to the D600, as I remember how much I liked the D7000. With a grip, I actually much preferred it's form factor over the D700, but the only thing missing was full frame.

Makes sense and explains why you are following the rumours so closely. The D800 and D800E appear to be coming down in price now with the E being available for £2479 in the UK. Buying two of them would be extremely expensive, but would you really gain anything apart from more MP over what you currently own if you went to the rumoured D600? I'd be really surprised if it was the smaller form factor of the D7000 also as the D300s is the same size as the D700/D800 bodies whilst still being a crop.

Sadly expensive gear tends to come with lots of weight, from bodies to lenses :(

I can't get over how much my D300s + nikon grip + nikon 28-70 F2.8 (the beast) combo actually weighs. Definitely more than my 5D mk ii did with even my solid metal sigma 150mm macro lens!

Well from the leaked pictures the D600 is in a D7000 body, and other spec's like body weight would also confirm a smaller body. So I think the chances are only the viewfinder will be larger than a D7000.

As long as the AF is decent then I'll be going for a couple of D600's. It would also be nice if it has the same advanced metering features as the D800, i.e. it would be really useful if the camera can recognise faces and skin tone to measure the correct exposure. This would be very useful in backlit scenarios, especially if you shooting a little wide.
Would also be great if it had similar DR characteristics as the D7000, so I'm hoping it's a Exmor.

As many people know by now, I don't hold even a pinch of salt to any of the rumours as I'd much rather just wait and see what the product is like, if it actually exists. I still think it would be an odd choice to stick a FF sensor in a crop size body though personally as I think a D400 (replacement to D300s) would be better suited in such a body instead, but thats my 2 pence of opinion there.

Yeah the advanced metering would be a bonus as it means less work in post to get the picture you want (ideally anyway). I personally hope they don't skimp on the weather sealing if it does indeed go to a smaller body!

while a D300s replacement (d400) is clearly needed there just haven't been any recent rumours of any reliability. While the D600 rumours are numerous, frequent, fairly reliable (e.g. semi-official Nikon magazine listing it, multiple different sources, some professionals hinting at the likelihood).

Nikon have already released the likely kit lens for it 24-85 VR.

To me the quality of the rumours seems about as high as it gets, similar to the D800 rumours which were pretty much spot on for months before the official release (36Mp, D4 AF system, maintaining built in flash, ISO range, noise performance at high ISOs, dual SD card slots, raw video through HDMI).

But then there are plenty of people who don't need weather sealing or anything like that. I think Nikon really already have the D800 out for users like you, and they're more targeting people who are using a camera far more casually but would easily be swayed into buying with the simple 'it makes the backgrounds blurry' argument as a point and shoot. The majority of people invested in a system will continue to invest in the system, it's the low-end/beginner market where it's really possible to convince people to bounce between systems - something a low-price full frame camera could really do well at. Heck, sell it with a 50 1.8G as a kit and I'm sure you'd get plenty of buyers if you advertised the blurry background stuff enough
