Daddy Long Legs

Witnessed a Daddy Long Legs and a Wasp having a scrap the other day. :D

The Daddy Long Legs kind of hobbled away and the Wasps was just writhing around on the floor! Guess the Daddy Long Legs pwned then?
 
It's not a question of being scared of them...i just wanted a peaceful night instead of hearing the sound of crane flies flying around my room.
 
Had two flying round my room last night so it was annoying me...

Yes, I'm scared of many things, spiders probably being one of them but I don't feel I have to kill something 1/100th my size just because it's ruining my sleep.

A glass and a sheet of paper is a wonderful thing.

Its a Daddy long legs FFS, They dont do anything except make tangle spider webs on the corners of rooms and eat the damm flys and mosquitoes and other spiders.
I have 5+ in my room at any given time,

They arnt anything to be scared of

I concur with you sir, however after rescuing the fourth cranefly last night I started swatting them.
 
Just finished eating and was sitting at the dinner table when one of the blighters lands on the place mat.

Queue 'OMG (screaming) DAD DAD GET IT OUT OF HERE (more girly screaming)'

Then my mother squishes it with her paper napkin. :(

Infested!

I've been overun this summer by Crane flies (Tipulidae), Harvestmen (Opiliones), and several varieties of house spider!!!!!!

It started with Moths, but they vanished only to be replaced by bloody Crane flies!

The spiders i dont mind, they just create annoying cobwebs everywere, plus they eat the crane flies I can't be bothered to swat. But they'll all be going when I redecorate.

My apartment is south facing, great for all day sunshine and heating but a nightmare for insects and bugs! Straight outside my living room door is a big communal lawn, then after that is a HUGE sports field so i can't win unless i leave all doors and windows closed!! :(


Also another note to those of you who put lighting in your cases, insects love light, especiall Ultraviolet / UV. What looks cool to you also looks very attractive to all the flies, etc that come into your room. My advice would be to take the UV sources out of you chasis or alternatively, buy a bug zapper, and place it somewhere away from your comp.

Nearly right....

Actually Daddy Long Legs have the 8th most lethal poison to humans, black widow venom and bird eating tarantula both being more poisonous.

The Daddy Long Legs has tiny jaws and so finds it hard to get it's fangs sunk into human skin. However it can be done, but the venom is in such small quantities that it simply has no effect.

Oh and don't forget their other common names...

Mosquito eaters, lollygaggers, gallinippers, gollywhoppers, doizabizzlers, chicken flies, mosquito hawks, leather jackets, Jimmy Spinners, skeeter eaters and flipadoodles.

Bird eating tarantulas Theraphosa blondi are not remotely venomous to humans.

The urtricating hairs on them will do you more long term damage than a bite.
 
I find it amazing that Daddy Long Legs/Crane Flies go to so much trouble to head for a light source when they should be out mating! They only live for around 24 hours!
