Dad's car stolen last night, venting - update - insurer paying out

It's really up to the owner to make nicking a car as difficult as possible for the scrotescumsuckers ,
the mere sight of a steering wheel lockbar or a gearstick/handbrake lockbar will deter most thieves.

Well, thanks for the ever-so-helpful spot of victim-blaming there Roland. Please don't be too upset if I tell you to bog off :p

Like I said, it's a daily driven car. We figured the battery cut-off would be enough to deter anyone who was rocking up to the car as a target of opportunity while leaving the car in a state where it could be quickly made working again when we wanted to drive it. Clearly whoever nicked it was ready for that, so it's more likely to be a theft with an element of planning behind it to my mind.

One of those driveway retractable posts is a very effective deterrent, a friend got one after his e46 M3 was stolen, he wasn’t quite so fond of it though after he reversed its replacement e92 straight into said post mind you.... :D

I thought jacking alloy wheels was now a thing of the past, just like jacking car stereos.
I know of somebody who had the Pro Nav widescreen lifted from his f10 - the car was written off as a result it was an early 10 plate with high miles, apparently the thieves used a Sthil saw type contraption to quite literally cut it out of the dashboard which wrecked the interior!

About 20 years ago my mate had the alternator nicked from his car parked out in the street.
He found out why when he priced up a new one.

Sometimes what people will do beggars belief

Very true, more than once when I’ve overnighted in my truck I’ve got up in the early morning to an apparent battery failure only to discover someone has stolen one or both of them during the night!

Its ok if you fit dictch finders the theives wont touch them then ;)

Most people these days just have standard fit factory ones which don't really seem to interest thieves. I guess if you're splashing the cash on a set of aftermarket alloys then yeah, i guess you could find your car jacked up. However i'd then say don't waste your cash and spend that little bit extra on a better car.

Funny you say that, i remember reading a thread on here of someone with a fiesta with the ST trim that woke up the following morning to find bumper/skirts etc stripped from the car. Had to tell my brother about that as he's got the ST trim on his. Although he's smashed into a badger at some point last year, so the bumpers probably not in a condition worth stealing :D.

.

You're in shock re the incident and rightly blaming yourself for the theft of your father's pride and joy,
so I will resist the temptation to report your rude and mirthless post. ;)

Yeah, you know what - I'm having a proper 'sense of humour' failure sort of a day so please do go ahead and report it to the mods, let them decide if it was rude enough to warrant removal. Oh, and hey, thanks for throwing in that I'm "rightly" blaming myself. I was pretty certain that I was blaming the thief/thieves, but if it's your opinion that I'm to blame then I guess we should just roll with that! :p

Aaaaaaaaaaaanyway...

Another half hour or so and I get to have the phone conversation with pa where I tell him that his car has disappeared. That ought to be about as amusing as cancer. Insurance company has started the paperwork ball rolling in case the car isn't found. Then one or two more errands to run and I can have a drink.

Away on holiday? Don't envy you that phone call. :(

Had a similar experience a few years ago. Sisters house got broken into when she was away on honeymoon. They went looking for the keys for her Pug 207 and her other halfs Focus.. Nothing else touched. They unlocked the Focus, pushed it into the street so they could get the 207 out which was parked down the side of the house.

Must have been stolen to order. I can't fathom why someone would go all that bother for a 3 year old Pug 207 1.4 with wheel trims otherwise. Police spotted the car 10 minutes later, but it got away (!) and was never found.

Far too common an occurrence these days. Two of my mates I go to the Ring with had their cars nicked (M2 / A45 AMG) within 2 days of one another a couple of weeks back. Both found parked up as trackers fitted, so most likely parked to see if they had trackers fitted.

Scum.

That is common on cars where the parts are a universal fitting across the range. Loads of bumpers get stolen off Fiesta/Focus STs, RSs, Audis S3s, etc. So people can use them to make fake ones. If manufacturers made the fittings different, it would probably stamp it out :/

He took it pretty calmly. Still sucked to have to tell him. But I'm finally done with everything I had to do, I've got cold beer and a cat to keep me company, today can finally just **** off.

As well as a prison sentence, homes of thieves should be subject to an “Open Day”.
Law-abiding members of the public should be able to turn up and randomly remove all their posessions.

Hate thieves. Absolutely hate them.

I'm not, as a rule, someone who is for capital punishment. But I would back a law that lets you cheerfully take a pickaxe handle to car thieves, TWOC'ers or even people who 'just' vandalise cars and brutally beat the snot out of them.

Nobody mentioned a fuel cut off switch that's wired in and hidden? My old dc2 had one.

One of the better ones I ever saw was on a '69 Dodge Charger, where someone wired an ignition lockout to the switch for the dome light. A thief would have all on trying to figure that out. And yeah, on a modern a fuel cut off switch is a pretty good anti-theft measure. On anything that has a mechanical fuel pump (i.e. 4/5ths of all the cars that were ever built with carbs rather than fuel injection!) then fuel cut off is less straightforward to achieve :)
