Dad's car stolen last night, venting - update - insurer paying out

Similar happened to someone I know, house broken into, 2 sets of keys taken (whilst he and his wife, kids etc were upstairs sleeping)

New Merc and a Golf pinched, insurance were good enough to payout full value for both only days later.

Scary stuff.

Makes you wonder, is it best to have your keys in an easy to find location? Somewhere obvious? On the flip side you don't want the thieves looking round for too long putting your family in harms way..

Most likely if they can't find them easily they will give up. On the up side, you can legally kill them if they do come after you :p

More likely laziness on the homeowners part by not securing their property properly.

The amount of people I know who have a house alarm who don't set it at night, or don't have interior door locks etc.

I don't mean you have to turn your home into fort knox, but is locking an extra door or two at night and pressing a few buttons on a keypad really such a huge inconvenience. While the majority of people continue to be such easy targets, these thefts will continue.

Really sorry to hear of the theft JRS, never a nice thing to have to deal with.

I'm afraid I completely disagree with making it harder to find/steal the keys. If I were for example to lock the kitchen and lounge doors, and they broke in downstairs, they'd still be able to come upstairs... no thanks.

I'd rather they were taken with no fuss than end up with a confrontation either in my home or elsewhere.

Not setting your alarm on the other hand, well, that's just daft.

And house burglaries, muggings, anything driving related that doesn’t make them a quick buck...

Blame lack of resources but had 4 officers stood around near a bus stop on the A10, one with a speed gun and the others just standing around. Only about 500m away from a proper speed camera too.

If they're in the house to get the keys they won't think twice about about using violence to get the keys, that's why I leave them downstairs.

If you want to give thieving scum an easy life why not just leave the keys in the car with the V5 and the service book ?

Dearie me, what a strange attitude.

Dearie me, you'd put your family in danger for a car that's insured?

There's been a few home invasion robberies by serious criminal gangs the last couple of years where they steal the keys for fast 4WD performance hatches like the Golf R and Audi S3 (which Paradigm owns) to use as getaway cars. You may remember the Royal Navy officer from Manchester who got run over trying to stop someone taking his car, and subsequently died from his injuries.

It's not making things easier it's avoiding conflict with violent criminals who won't think twice about putting an iron bar over your head. Let someone else die a hero, I'll claim off my insurance.

If a thieving scumbag wants to break in to our house solely to steal one of ours cars then I'd prefer he just did it without waking one of us up. That's what insurance is for. You can replace a car but you can't easily fix the mental anguish caused by a confrontational home invasion.

Making the house less attractive to a burglar however, is wise. But that's a slightly different situation.

My colleague had his RS4 stolen from his drive in Birmingham while him and his girlfriend slept. He had nest cameras covering the outside of the house which notified their phones at the time, but due to do not disturb it didnt make a noise. In a way hes grateful it stayed quiet as who know what would have happened if he confronted them.

However thanks to the cameras the police found the gang 3 days later but the RS4 was long gone for parts etc. It was also involved in 2 other robberies. Looking back at the footage they came back 3 times the week before to scout it out.

Read a story about a guy who had a very nice Subaru Impreza, slept with his keys under his pillow every night. One night he was woken up by a thief standing over him with a baseball bat demanding he tells him where the keys for the car were. As others have said for something that's insured it's not worth the potential risk of the situation escalating.

Sorry about the about the robbery JRS :( I hope you can get everything resolved smoothly for here on out.

Well, the insurer is paying out. £4900 after excess, which we're reasonably okay with. I went hunting for examples similar in spec, condition and age, prices range all over the map but the offer is close enough to average that it's not really worth the time and energy to fight for more. Pa's big worry was that they were going to say "well, it's not concours so we're only going to give you 2 grand". I didn't really feel like an offer that low was ever on the cards, but you never know with insurers in this country.

Obviously no signs of it reappearing. And no real sign of police attention to the case - but what the hell, it's not like the village has seen two motorhomes and three cars stolen inside six weeks OH WAIT YES IT HAS :mad:

Not going to replace it with another Land Rover. Clearly we need to find something that's interesting to us but not too interesting to anyone in the 'thieving ***** scumbag' demographic. What d'you guys reckon to a Citroën AK350, i.e. a 2CV Breadvan? Pa wants one, I'm more than okay with the idea, can't quite get mum on-side just yet :D

I think anything out of the ordinary is going be a target, so if you get one make sure you take every precaution you can!

I have a plan for that. It starts with gating the driveway as a mild deterrent...and ends with a bloody large chain anchored to the coal bunker, wrapped around bits of the car being secured, as a less mild one.

***edit***

Wow, that was quick. I only requested the title change minutes ago! Mods are on the ball today. Cheers :)

Saw a lot of variations of this in Texas. Seems to work.

I use a garage that specialises in 4x4s, they're always sharing stolen Land Rover posts on Facebook.

Sadly if you want a nice old one these days you have to secure it really well it seems.

Unfortunately it's the way it is now. They're only interested in quick & easy cases or if you're the South Yorkshire force, people with hurt feelings.
Recently SYP came out with "Operation Duxford" - It's aim "to tackle crime".

Personally I thought that was called police work.

That still wouldn't stop anyone if they wanted it enough sadly :(

Aint that the truth. A family friend had his defender stolen of his front drive a few weeks ago even though it was immobilised & a steering lock fitted. From what I was told they backed up a Flat bed truck to his driveway in the middle of the night & Winched it on. As Usual no one saw or heard anything & he lives in a densely populated part of south Essex.

I unplug the start button on my car if I'm not going to be using it for a while. Only takes a minute to do by squeezing your hands in to the right part of the dash, but it would take ages for someone else to figure it out. It makes it seem like the battery is dead.

A flatbed is going to be a targeted theft though. But you can do things to make it hard to get to so it would take to long and make to much noise for them to risk it.
