Dad's new toy

The 993 was also more reliable and better built than the 996. Also why did he go for Tiptronic, as they really aren't that good!

In terms of clubs you have PCGB or TIPEC. TIPEC is more friendly and more affordable, while PCGB is somewhat snobby! See there websites for more detail.

Nice car looks great!

I've driven a couple of these and I love them!

The noise is just amazing, echoing other people in saying he should have got a Manual but I suppose its down to how he drives.

The Manual does drive better but he might never drive it fast.

Got to agree with ThePharcyde - the 993 was a better looking car.

Aircooled too ;)

Its only better in a true die-hard enthusiest mind. Some people got upset when Porsche moved away from air-cooled engines.

The new 996 was huge improvements all round, a far superior car. More powerful engine with the power more usuable. Far superior handling and much improved interior and creature comforts whilst still been a true drivers car.

Its a nice car your dad has bought but I hope he paid no more than 25k for it as the only thing it has going for it that lets it hold its price better is the low mileage. The tiptronic does not really add to the value as they hinder performance a bit over the manuals.

When I was looking at Porsches a 1998 example with the horrible orange indicators with 40k-70k on the clock ranged from 22k - 25k, colours made little difference price, except the horrible green ones tend to sell very cheap as its so NOT a porsche colour.

For 26k-28k getting a newer 1999-2000 C2 or C4 is possible with sub 60k miles, clear lenses all round and some even had the Aerokit and larger Porsche alloys fitted.
30k area will get you a great example 2000-2001 996 C2 or C4 with low mileage.

Spend in the region of 35-40k and you might be able to grab the absolutely gorgeous C4S which are amazing.

I still want a Porsche and the C4S might be my next car but I also love the new C6 Corvettes too. My Mustang has appreciated massively in price, I could make more or less 10k profit on it at the moment which is good but I aint selling as I love it so much.

Porsche do extended full warranties for any serviced Porsche up to 11 years old for £730 a year, can be well worth it on some of the older or higher milage ones.

26-28 is right money for a 98 Carrera 2 depending on miles and spec of course but for that money it would be mint, full clear lense change if you buy and DIY is £595 + VAT, no idea what Porsche would actually charge for it.

It's no issue for insurance and if you pay extra you get robbed, I was just told that it was fine but if I smacked it they would replace with oranges again not clears.

I would also stick to a manual, driven lots of the tips and never liked any of em.

When I looked round 29k would get you a mint 2000 model, with low miles, clear lenses all round and some even had aerokits and the turbo alloys fitted with many extra for those prices.

EDIT - ignore me

Actually you're quite right, prices have change a lot in the last 6 months since I was looking again.

Hmm, maybe I'm due a change again

Nice purchase  I *will* own a Porsche 911 at some point in my life - hopefully before I'm too old to appreciate it :p

I hope you get a spin in it soon.

Beautiful car, really lovely.

Have you got any more details? It's a 98, right? How much did he pay and did he get it privately or from a dealer?

For your research, my dad paid £40k for his 2002 52, carrera 2 cab tiptronic.

Nice car your dad has there. :)

Not at all - I said it was better looking.

The last of the air-cooled engines was great; at complete odds with every other engine on the market...An oddball.

The new 996 was huge improvements all round, a far superior car. More powerful engine with the power more usuable. Far superior handling and much improved interior and creature comforts whilst still been a true drivers car.

I know two people who traded their new 996's back in and bought 993's again.

Other than the fried-egg lights, they missed the rawness of the 993.

It's a 911 - It's supposed to kill you if you lift off mid-corner!

None of this safe-handling 4WD malarky.

From the title of this thread i was half expecting to see a picture of something else! :p

Beautiful car btw. Only wish i could afford one. :(

Lovely looking car. I'll have to test drive one sometime as a 911 is definitely top of my "next car" list at the moment.

For anyone that's interested in a 911, I found this site to be pretty good

For me the 993 Turbo is beyond words of comparison. I love it.

Still the 996 is still a pretty car though and I would love one!

Amen.
I was trying to convince the wife to let me re-mortguage the house so I can buy one...any guesses to what she said?!

Only if you clean the house 5 days a week, stop watching football, stop asking for sex and give me a masage every night? :p
