Hi,

I see there are quite a lot of cheap (£50) linux based NAS devices on the market now. If I were to buy one of these, would I be able to access the NAS from Windows 7 without any additional software? Could I map a network drive to the NAS as I would with another machine on the network or would the EXT2/3 file system stop that from happening?

I want to set up a passive music server with the storage sat somewhere else, ideally via a cheap NAS with a couple of drives in RAID1...

Yeah should simply show up on "Network" in explorer, if not then should be able to accessing it via the IP in explorer and both cases would just mount the IP address/device name.
