Dambusters censored!

You are comparing 1950s Britain to the 21st century and don't think anything has changed (for better or worse) in those 60ish past years??

anyway if that remakes still going ahead it looks like old ****** will be there
hurrar!

ummmm "swearing" cos surprisingly, ****** is a swear word (as well as a really common dogs name) to 99.8% of the known universe, before the watershed isn't really allowed.

****** was a name in the film, hardly a swear word, it only becomes a swear word in the context it was used in.

What I find amazing about PC is how on earth do a small minority of miserable, pathetic hermits whould should be strung up and beaten to near-death, manage to have such a HUGE influence.

ok whats easier dealing with 50 complaints from confused OcUK keyboard warriors for removing the non offensive word.

Or dealing with 50,000 from irate confused mums and dads that had their kids hear it completely out of context, cos its a dogs name.

that is the reality of it. Nothing more to say different era, blah blah Tin TIn. I wish all the PC anti PC people had something a lot more constructive to spend their time on.

Good days to you sirs.

If Only!

It would more likely have been the idea of one pathetic programme executive, or a few complaints at most.

It's like when Clarkson described a car as "queer" and there was a fuss over something like 4 complaints. Perhaps the BBC should have gave them the finger and told them not to watch it if they found Clarkson's sense of humour offensive.

Very few people complained about big brother until it was shown by the media non stop for a week. Its the puppets that complain because they feel compelled to do so with no real reasoning that caused the big brother problem.

Lmao, 50k complaints? Its really only takes 2 or 3 complaints. Sure look at top gear for example. Any time there is a story about a complaint, when you read up about it; its normally only 2 or 3 people that have done it.

i've counted more than 2 or 3 already just from this forum.

You are right tho 50k was a silly number plucked out for effect. Theres hardly that many people with that much free time on their hands to bother.

I meant it only takes 2 or 3 to complain about a show for them to say cancel it, or edit it out the next time

And i think its good to see that the BBC never gave into the complaints about Top gear

Can you imagine the amount of complaints they would get if they did! Sundays evenings are not the same with out it. :(

Regarding the edits in the film re the dog's name when the film was last shown on ITV:

From Wikipedia

These scenes were cut from ITV's last showing of The Dam Busters after their previous broadcast received complaints for the use of the word ******. While ITV has been criticised for censoring historical fact, and maligning the impact of a moving cinematic sequence in the process, the edited "politically correct" showing received fewer complaints than the previous un-edited broadcast.

I wonder if these new complaints will fall on deaf ears as they'll get complaints either way.

"Damned if you do, damned if you don't" springs to mind.

How pathetic, I love that film.

It does appear that this censorship has indeed occurred before. I found this article from 2005:- http://film.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,12589,1662517,00.html

Strictly speaking, it's a proper noun, used to name the dog in question and so is entirely different in meaning and usage to the term used to insult people. For example, if the film were to be translated into (say) German, the proper nouns would probably remain intact, for example, "John", "Lancaster", etc. Conversely, nouns would in all likelihood be translated into their German equivalent, so instead of using the "N" word to insult someone, the German equivalent (if any) would be used instead. As such, I don't believe the dog's name can legitimately be lumped into the same category as the insult, however, while I can appreciate the difference, I suspect that C4 has to consider that some people will, given the opportunity, choose to actively take offence.

Anyone had a reply about the complaints? Apart from the initial conformation email I haven't heard a thing back from them yet.
