Dammit... I have a Desire for a new phone...

I've been testing phones at work and been through all the new ones.

IMO the Desire wins clearly. The screen is not super huge like on X10 and HD2. It's got a perfect balance between size and practicality.

I have said several times before, its not just my opinion it is the opinion of the vast majority of tech websites and phone enthusiasts.
.

take off the rose tinted specs when you read/watch them reviews and you will probably have the same opinion as me and the op in that there is very little in it

i couldn't make my mind up for weeks and in the end the price was literally the only decider for me

anyway why isnt the nexus one being mentioned ? better than them both

Interesting discussion for sure. I was in a toss up between the desire and x10 a month ago and went desire mainly bc of 2.1 over 1.6 . The x10 has a nice front but will take forever to get updated bc of it.

can anyone tell me what 2.1 offers over 1.6 then ? none of the reviews ever do and on here people seem offended when i ask ?

did that 3mm really make it unpractical ? both are massive

Provided it gets rooted (which doesn't matter to many people anyway), the Galaxy S is the best one at the moment.

Its not perfect though.

i hope to never touch a samsung again after my omnia although i guess i will have to try a galaxy s at some point

id take a htc over it anyday tbh. they must be due an announcement of new phones soon ? . is the little bit of extra speed on the galaxy s going to make a huge difference or is it just going to drain the battery ? i cant ever remember using my 1ghz snapdragon and thinking ''man i need something faster'' :p

also did i miss why the 4gs isnt a consideration ? it really doesnt look bad at all :o

I wouldnt get the x10, the gf had one for about a month... was returned once and new one is sitting on ebay, she seen the light and finally got a Desire, loves it!

Couldnt get contact pictures or anything on the x10, felt very basic, media/time thingy was pretty poor functioning, battery needed charged towards the end of the day, kept crashing, freezing, losing track of the time (?)... did have a big screen tho :) But that was about it lol

That's the worse excuse yet.....

Yes it does, you can even sync them with Facebook if you like using applications.

kept crashing

Mines not crashed once, since I have owned it.

battery needed charged towards the end of the day

Most Smart phones do!

felt very basic

er... How?

media/time thingy was pretty poor functioning

Timescape is a little bit of gimmicky but it has potential. Mediascape IMO is one of the best media applications around for a STOCK android handset.

But the X10 has a bigger screen and is far better looking...

WHOAH THERE WHOAAAAAAAAAH!

Did you just call the x10 good looking, more than the Desire?!

The X10 is a plastic, shiny finger print magnet with pointy corners, it's the exact opposite of ergonomic and the plastic chrome hardware buttons don't inspire confidence either.

The only plus point I can see in it (and I have handled one in CPW) is the big screen but even then it's not an AMOLED screen so loses out of the picture quality of the Desire/N1.

IMO HTC is where it's at, always.

Well the battery life on the desire isn't that much better. However, at a push I have managed 3 / 4 days from my X10 that was with completely no data use though and not much else lol.

The battery life issue i'm just taking from reading the replies in the X10 thread. Seems a lot of people are having issues and looking at sending theirs back (same with the power plug issue)?

That 4 days with 3g off or just not used? My HD lasts around 3-4 days with 3g on (wifi off) and light use (couple of shortish calls, 5-10 mins or so browsing a day and a few texts). Anything like that?

Interesting discussion for sure. I was in a toss up between the desire and x10 a month ago and went desire mainly bc of 2.1 over 1.6 . The x10 has a nice front but will take forever to get updated bc of it.

And this is one of the reasons I will really only consider it properly if it is actually rootable. Having had a HD I know how brilliant being able to pick and choose what you want the OS build to be like (and having the latest OS before other phones). Without root it's a bit boring.

You're ether taking the pea or completely blind :p:D

I hope so. :p

Damn it, I actually made a decision and it's now been ruined by out of stockness and the X10 being the same price (was more expensive usually).:(:p

There's not enough in it to go elsewhere really. It'll be around £60+ different and it's not worth it as they are so close.

Oh and as for the iPhone 4 question... Yes it is a nice phone (rather sexy actually, unlike the older ones), shame about the software. Flash it with Winmo or Android and it would be an option. The other issue is cost. Normally it wouldn't be an issue but the only reason I'm getting a new phone now is because it will actually be cheaper in the long run than sticking with my HD and a sim only contract.

(Still bemused as to why the HD is worth more than the HD2 and X1 as well as a load of newer phones on the recycling site).

Its only the OEM screen protector that is a finger print magnet, I have changed mine to a clear-coat one and the difference is night and day. Everyone likes different aesthetics that's is a personal preference.

The only plus point I can see in it (and I have handled one in CPW) is the big screen but even then it's not an AMOLED screen so loses out of the picture quality of the Desire/N1.

Is that because it runs Android 1.6 which has a 65K colour limit? I have no problems with a AMOLED screen just from personal experience with them I have found them to be completely useless outside in sunlight and the colours to be a bit oversaturated. However, on the flip side the TFT is also far from perfect. :)

IMO HTC is where it's at, always.

In you're option maybe it is. In mine its the X10.

Expected facebook thing to work out of box, shes a girl... i was suprised enough with her going android... but there are limits to how much she likes messsing about!

The 2nd one she got crashed even more than the 1st, woke it up and it would reset etc

Battery, well yeah most need charged nightly... but this wasnt making it towards the end of the day, was well gone :( The Desire seems to last closer to 2 days... not quite tho!

Basic... i dunno, just using it didnt feel as expected... i know its a highly modified 1.6... but it was just lacking something.

Same with mediathingy, just didnt feel right... everyones different i guess.

user error doesnt mean its rubbish. mediascape is arguably better than the stock android offering and if you dont like it then theres plenty of alternatives on the market. crashing, freezing and losing track of time sounds like someones been using a task killer

dont know where people are getting 'just a few hours use' for the battery either. i get more than a day and always have done after the first week of ownership.

Task Killer... :/ Doubt she would even know what that is never mind using one.

I do actually use a task killer :)

Amp 34 how much are you seeing x10/desires for ? id honestly look on ebay at the unwanted upgrades that are still in sealed boxes. loads selling for dirt cheap from sellers with great feedback.

I mean on contract. Usually the X10 appeared to be at least £5 a month more however on buymobiles the £30 tariff is exactly the same for both. :)
