damn the pentium M is quick!!

well given my current gfx card situation, i have no need to run at the fastest clocks i can.... still that will change in a couple of weeks when i pick up a 7800gs or x850xt and get back into the old gaming again.... :p

i guess you could stick any 533fsb s479 cpu in there. quite why i don't know. you finding it too slow for your needs already? :p

howabout a 780? not much change from 450 notes for one of those on their own.... :D

wondering if i can put a faster cpu in my laptop, currently its the PM730 was wondering if the 750 is a direct replacement?

i dont think it would be worth it really, for 233mhz

i have gone the opposite, sold 6800gt now using 9800pro, i just dont game anymore.

well you must still be doing something cpu intensive to warrant the overclock? 2.8ghz is a bit overkill for browsing the web.... :p

I agree, but i get a good FPS on MSN :p , msoffice, msn web browsing, tis a waste i must admit. i was gaming a lot when i bought it (about 8 month ago now) its capable of 2.8, so i dont see the point in running it slower. global warming bah.... :o

too much hassle setting up the EIST or turning up and down all the time.

would i be able to put one of those core duo dual core cpus in my laptop or do they run on a different socket?

different socket unfortunately. if they did, a lot of desktop users like myself would be getting rather excited by the prospect.... :(

I just got hold of a Pentium M 740 1.73 /533/2m/ppga/co sl7sa

As far as i can tell, this is a dothan core, but it also appears to be socket 478, not 479.
I'm sorry for being such a n00b here, but whats the difference?
Can i just stick this in a skt478 board?

nope it's s479. apparently it does have 478 pins but the layout is different to normal s478 p4/celeron chips therefore it's called s479 to avoid confusion. :p

to run it in a desktop board you'll need either

1) a specific asus s478 mobo (there's a choice of about half a dozen) and an asus ct479 adapter
2) a native s479 board. these are very few and far between.....

as you can see from my sig, i'm running one in an asus p4c800e deluxe.......

ahh, i see.
I was hoping to run it in a micro-atx rig. Are there any micro-atx boards which fit the adaptor?

The other option would be to go with a barebones option from Aopen or shuttle, anyone had experience with these?

XR13? bit of a silly name steveo :p but seeing as you're blind... :)

Would you be able to see a shuttle? you'd be better off with a HUGE tower server =D

As for your Q, no idea to be honest - I'm guessing any would do, i don't think there's many that overclock well, I may be wrong.

Ill try dig out the thread on the pin mods etc.

Edit:

Sticky on P-M's

(from what I Can see, there's not any micro-atx motherboards which support the adaptor)

p4p800-vm available in the uk is matx and supports the ct 479 adapter but its not a great clocker - theres dfi and an asrock native boards but they dotn clock well either and they cost the earth

youd be better off with a p4p800se full size atx board - or maybe if you want pci-e the p4gpl-x is still available in the uk, it supports the ct-479 adapter and is pci-express (x1900+dothan=:D)

the best dothan board is the p4c800 e-d - but there becoming hard to find new, and second hand they can fetch 60 quid

well i;m building a system for my sister so she doesn;t need a power-house :D.
I;m thinking:
740 (got for 45 quid on the bay!)
p4p800-vm + ct-479 (about 60-65 quid)
Antec Aria Micro ATX Cube Case (70 quid)
80 gig hdd (40 quid)
2 gigs of value ram (106 quid)
19" tft (160 quid)

Not a bad rig for £485 ish

should be decen tfor what she needs

If i can oc it a bit then great, but its not the be all and end all :)
