damn you snow!!!

Tried to get the vectra up a hill today with about 3 inch thick snow. Completely undisturbed with no gritting.

Was going nowhere at all and just span the wheels, had to detour to a different route that had been well trodden by cars to create ruts to get up it.

Clearly put it in fifth and rev til all the snow's been dispersed  :p

I'm going to have to buy some snow-chains I think, if this weather sticks around till the 14th as predicated, it's going to cause me (and many others I'm sure) no end of headaches, I just can't get any traction on the road to pull away, well I can get a bit if I go backwards but that's isn’t really practical.

I've found these Snow Socks for car tyres, they look a lot more convenient than chains for slipping on and off just to get in and out of the area I live to the main roads where I'd need to remove them again (as they are ok). Any thoughts or advice on these, any one have any or has used them etc?

The video is reasonably convincing, I just dunno, maybe traditional chains would be better.

Snow socks = useless on compacted snow/ice. At least chains dig in.

There is a reason that the French police refused to let our taxi up the alps without chains, and ONLY chains.

Ok, thanks for that, I was thinking much the same myself, I just didn't see how they could possibly work so well, I thought I might be just being my typical overly sceptical self though :p ...I'll go with a pair of £25 chains I found on the bay then in the right size, 235/50/18 is surprisingly tricky to find actually, most chains of this size don't fit tyre profiles as high as 50, usually stop at 45 or 40. being as my tyres aren't very low profile I think the chains will clear the alloys, or I hope, I only want them for some very low speed driving anyway.

I assume with the chains you have to take them off when there is no snow? I mean if your going from snow to no snow to snow. Know what I mean?

Yea you would have to, you'ed damage them, the road and possibly your tyres driving on a hard surface for too long with them.

DAM YOU LACK OF SNOW!

I was looking forward to a day off tomorrow when the Met office said "heavy snow from 6pm, with up to 40cm falling by the morning."

9:29 and not a flake so far :(

Personally I would not fit a cheap set like yours to my alloys. To a set of steelies then yeah. I have witnessed first hand what chains do to alloys.

They won't be a problem, unlike most snowchains, they are for my particular size of wheel only, they don't clatter round at all.

apparently they have shut the gates to the test centre my instructor called them this morning and its a no go. test centre is in Newcastle Under Lyme

My office is right behind there and I wasn't surprised to see it shut as I drove past lol.

Unfortunate though, I had a test cancelled once as an examiner just didn't bother to go in!

Nevermind mate it'll soon come round again :)
