Dark Soul's: Prepare to Die Edition (PC)

And I had no idea you could summon Sif! I restored humanity at the previous bonfire to see if I could see any summon signs, but didn't spot any.

Dont want to spoil it for you but you can find Sif if you search around the level, if you find him you will then see a summon sign in Manus' lair, its hard to spot when he's slapping the **** out of you though :D

The Manus dude took me 2 solid days of play to beat. My sage piece of advice is, in your chip and dodge strategy, if you think you've got him down to a point where you think you can go all gung ho for that last few HP's, THINK AGAIN, keep your bare minimum bash and run tactics going right until the very end. Under no circumstances try and sneak an extra hit in because your arse will simply be handed to you yet again if you deviate from this routine. Speaking as a melee only character this is.

Ok, cool. Will get looking. Could do with the help!

I couldn't even get distance at all. I must have been timing my dodges horribly because I didn't seem to get any invulnerability at all, let alone enough to cast any spells. I guess I could 2H my MLGS and try melee hit and roll.

I did just have a thought though... I play with dsfix and the 60fps option. I know this causes issues with jumps and rolls at times as I've had to turn it off to make some jumps (one in the Painted World, one in Oolacile, and another one earlier on that I forget now... [EDIT] ahh, I remember actually, it was the one to Snuggly's nest from the Parish lift). I wonder if this could be hampering my rolling and the invulnerability frames. May have to check this.

Got past the gargoyles then gave up as it was just too much of a timesink. I have too many games in my list to dedicate to this.

It would have been a great game for me to play as a student.

Got in from work about 40 minutes ago and had another load of goes at him.

Had him down to about 25% health on my second go today, but that's my best out of about seven or eight attempts.

Tried melee. Gah, that was even worse. He's so fast and has such a variety of attacks. And all but one or two of his magic attacks one-shot me from full health even.

I was determined to solo him, but I may need to go back for the wolf. I can last the first few melee attacks, feel like I'm getting a pattern and then he mixes up his various melee attacks, that horrendous combo and his dark magic one-shot nastiness.

Somehow though I feel okay about my repeated attempts. I'm embracing failure. I will get this *******!

Manus took me ages as well... Sif is a bit of a help but not on the level of some of the other summon/boss combinations (beatrice + butterfly I'm looking at you)... It's more just that for the first half of the fight Sif gets beaten up instead of you...

It's a war of attrition as someone above said... keep plinking away at him and learn to dodge the various different attacks, it'll happen eventually!

Don't play the game for a little bit. Don't read about the game, don't think about it. Come back and try it again tonight or even tomorrow and you will do it first time without breaking a sweat. I can't explain it but that is how Dark Souls works!

That sounds very useful, since as a magic user getting the time and space to get off the heavy damage spells is half the battle. I kind of feel like I want to solo this guy now though. He's got to me!

I like that thinking! And it certainly worked that way with both Taurus and Capra demons for me. Stray demon too, actually now I think of it.

Having a bit of trouble with the not thinking about it though. Trying to work today with Manus strategies going through my head! (So what if I upgraded some lighter armour and got my load under 25% and used the DWGR? I need to try out this pendant thing. I need to read that attack where I can't just dodge-roll straight back. Should I summon Sif or not? Etc...)

(EDIT: and of course I had another half-dozen or so attempts at him later last night. No joy. This is the first real sticking-point I've hit. Gaping Dragon, Capra and Seath took me several tries, but with each I felt I was learning and making progress. This guy? Pfff, God knows! Anyway, then I put the game down and went to read some Neil Gaiman. That felt better.)

I got lucky and beat Manus first time and had no idea he was meant to be so hard... Then when I played it again about 6 months ago it took me far too many attempts and I nearly gave up. In the end luckily I was able to summon someone, otherwise I would probably still be there!

I've started on my new character and so far it has been going alright, sadly I haven't managed to get very far due to the fact I am getting really bad performance for some reason, I turned off crossfire which seemed to help a bit but I'm still getting a load of fps dips that didn't happen when I was playing through the first time on my laptop :(

I definitely need to plan out what I want to do with my build, as just now I really don't have much of an idea as to what skills I want to invest in, so I've just been going with vit and endurance

Go for a Faith/Dex build. I had a lot of fun using that with the Great Scythe as my main weapon, using the various buffs you can get. Miracles are strong but not as OP as Magic or Pyromancy so it's a bit more of a challenge as well.

Gotta admit the discussion here is making me want to give the game a go again... I did complete it once and started NG+ which I was making my way through, I can't remember how far I got but was finding it okay. Still need to pickup DS2 oneday even though I've heard it isn't quite so good

@strumpusplunket

Thanks dude, I've specifically just re read all your post and it's literally rekindled my love for this game. Going to be playing tonight :D:D:D:D:D

:D

Cool! Be good to read the opinions of someone coming to a second playthrough. I can't remember the last time a game felt this good to play for me.

Managed a quick couple of (solo) goes at Manus earlier this evening. Died both times, but got him down to about 15-20% health each time. Feels like I'm learning and adapting and every time I think "I'll get him for sure next time!"

Twenty times or so I must have died to Manus now. It really is testament to the quality of the game and the combat system is that even after so many attempts at one boss I still think to myself "what a great game this is, what an amazing boss fight this is!"

The key to the whole game is patience, and not to get "greedy" in the sense that, don't make another swing if there is a slight possibility of getting clobbered.

Update: Just had one more quick go after dinner, deciding to summon Sif this time:

YES! Best feeling ever from a game!

Not sure Sif made the fight that much easier in the end. He didn't even aggro Manus except for one occasion (though that did enable to drink an estus). Think the key was sticking closer to him. That attack where he throws out that ring of dark orbs was doing me every time and I was never close enough to run into him reliably and it would one-shot me. However, as I could roll back out of the rain and dodge his other attacks, sticking close to him made things much easier and I hit with more of my spells too. YES! :D

EDIT: And yeah, Dave that is absolutely right! The times earlier it had gone to my head getting him down so low on health. Last time I was much more methodical and careful.

EDIT2: Those runs at Manus were actually great training for me. Forced me to up my game, got me out of my heavier armour back into my chain set for <25% load fastrolls, broke my habit of turtling with a shield and forced me to get used to being more mobile.

Love how such a challenge paid off like that.

As a result, I was able to take down Kalameet on my first attempt - which I have no doubt I would have failed to do had I not learned and adapted from my epic struggles with the Father of the Abyss.

Congrats :)

Yeah Sif was possibly the most useless summon in the game, I don't think he even did one point of damage in my fight, useless :p

Surprisingly though I still didn't find the DLC bosses that difficult, I thought Kalameet was the most difficult but I only had to go back for a fourth try to beat him, maybe I was just over-powered at the point I played it? S&O were the most difficult boss fight in my opinion, *******s.
