Darkfall online

It's a not like saying windows sucks - you're serioously outnumbered by people who disagree and if the definition of 'good' is measures by success then you're on shaky ground - but doubtless many Linux users share your views. IMHO you both have a point.

Regarding darkfall check out the blogs section on mmorpg.com. There's an interesting blog from someone who started out hating it, then clanned up and loves it now. Kind of defines the game.

Gah. Right, WOW = very very very popular. Saying 'WOW not as good as most people seem to think' doesnt really match up with the sheer amount of people who pay to play. unless lots and lots of people are paying to play something theyre not really enjoying. Which doesnt make sense or SWG would be doing just great regardless of the 'new' content. Anyway off topic.

Heres that blog i was talking about earlier, gives a good snapshot of the game from one perspective.

No.
Lots of people are playing an extremely easy MMORPG - and unfortunately this is how "society" is these days.
WOW requires no real effort, you can "max" your character in a matter of a few months.
All the "best" characters are "cookie cut" - no variation.
The game is simply a race to the highest level possible as quickly as possible.
I feel ashamed that WOW should be even classed as an MMORPG.

WoW was excellent at first but now it has been dumbed down too much, they have essentially made every class "OK" at everything rather than each class having very clear strengths like they used to be, some classes still have an advantage over the other but they have closed the gap considerably for most things which is kinda disappointing.

I look forward to the next Blizzard MMO, the guy who was the lead designer of WoW is going to be working on it so it should be good, no doubt it will get dumbed down after a few years though like WoW but them first few years should be great. :)

Darkfall is a PvP game, the rest of the features seem to just be an afterthought.

Hopefully time with improve the PvE side of things, if not I can see it wearing a bit thin having pretty meaningless PvP.

I think this is a fine turn around in my opinion, just about every other mmorpg is the opposite, go play one of them.

Just a quick post to remind people that Darkfall will be releasing it's first Expansion (lol) next tuesday which hopefully will be awesome but I'm always skeptical.

for those interested and are still playing here is what was posted on the forums

On the American server: The American server will launch on July 7th. Characters from the European server can be cloned and moved without their possessions 3 months after the American launch. Certain restrictions and charges will apply, to be announced at a later date. In the meanwhile if you want to play on the American server at launch you need to buy the American Darkfall client. More information on the American server will be available in a few days.

Darkfall will launch a massive free expansion update the first week of July, something that the Darkfall team has been working on for a while now. This expansion includes major new features and major content, PvE, and PvP updates.

In the last few patches we had implemented several major optimizations making it possible to support even larger battles and sieges and more concurrent users than ever before. As a result, massive battles now run smoother than ever. We’ve seen some of the largest and the highest frequency of massive battles this past month, which has helped us find even more ways to optimize the Darkfall experience.

As a result of these optimizations we’ve also been able to keep sales open most of the time. We’re still being careful because Darkfall resubscription rates remain very high even though this is a time for exams and/or vacations. It’s still difficult to buy Darkfall but we hope that after the US servers have launched it will be easier for new players to learn about and to buy Darkfall.

To that effect, a new site is coming, along with new forums for Darkfall players only. These forums will be readable by the public and only players with active accounts will be able to post in them. The current public forums will remain active for anyone to post in, but moderation will be stronger. This because we’re getting people from other communities with the sole intention of disrupting our forums. The Darkfall community has always been a source of good feedback, constructive criticism, and inspiration for the Darkfall developers and we'll keep it that way by doing away with the non-constructive elements.

Our next major patch will be included in the Darkfall expansion the first week of July.

Thank you for reading

it sucks so badly, that's why it is empty.

Just hope someone will do a decent mmo. But I fear they won't for a long long time.

It's not empty and it doesn't suck so badly. It's not that great but it fills the gap while waiting for other major releases.

Personally I wouldn't recommend buying this even if the features look good. It sounds good on paper but almost every feature has been implemented poorly. There should never have been the amount of grind there was to stay competitive in a pvp game. It was kind of like a Korean grinding game without any content to grind with (just repeat the same actions over and over in a safe zone) but with OK pvp. The pvp wasn't bad but there were so many problems with the rest of the game it spoiled it.

The game never had any cheat detection and cheating was pretty common (speed hacks, wallhacks, teleport hacks, aimbots etc). Mobs where exploitable (you could get yourself invulnerable to the mobs and kill them for free money/items by going inside terrain). Even that situation could be excusable if you got the impression the devs were actually trying to fix the problems and dealing with them in the right way..instead they would send out multiple warnings to exploiters rather than ban and cheaters would have to be reported several times by people and wouldn't get banned unless a dev physically saw them cheating. They wouldn't use video evidence to ban even.

The server wasn't stable (frequent client and server crashes especially during sieges. Most of the client crashes have been fixed I believe but its still unstable during sieges). The game is way too focused on zerg fights (sieges) rather than small scale pvp. Gear doesn't really feel that important and I didn't really care about losing stuff, but still people would go pvping with no gear on because it wasn't essential. I remember killing a guy while I was naked with just my newbie weapon and he had full banded armour and decent weapon. We were hitting each other for similar amounts of damage because my ingame character was better than his..

Darkfall seems to have some of the worst community interaction i've seen, and you have to take what they say with a huge pinch of salt as you can't always believe what they say. Kind of funny looking back at some of the things they've said now that I've played the game. Oh and the website still has pure lies in the features area about the game. I wouldn't trust em with my money again personally. The server is pretty much dead anyway

Not a good free for all, full loot pvp mmo imo. Wait for Mortal Online. They seem like a much more professional company and have similar features to Darkfall, just hopefully done by decent devs

I feel I must remark on some of those things

- Sieges now run as smooth as they can, their is nearly zero slowdown during large sieges now which is fantastic!
-The game is Sandbox which promotes anything, small zergs, large zergs. It's not restricted and delivered on what it said (They're implemented villages which will hopefully bring out the small clans hopefully).
-Gear maybe didn't feel important because you were wandering around in cloth, try going out in Plate, Scale, Bone, Banded..
-I agree hacking is a problem, but it is in every mmo, and since Darkfall is relatively new indie developer developing for a niche market with a small team it's hard to control every aspect.

I understand it may seem like a failure but you have to put some effort in to enjoy this game.

as I say, it's not for everyone. but I'm really enjoying it, so are many others.

Fair enough. Its more like a sandbox without sand imo tho.

I don't care much about sieges. They could be fun but I prefer roaming in a small group.

Don't assume i went out in cloth btw lol. When I had full plate i used that for fun, or plate..didn't really matter. The best gear wasn't the most rare btw. I found a Studded chest with everything else Scale to be the best combo for protection/encumbrance. Gear was so easy to come by and wearing the cheapest crap or nothing at all was viable .. in a risk/reward game thats supposed to have an economy. I know it shouldn't all be about your gear but how you play, but being naked or wearing absolute crap shouldn't be an option.

I might resub sometime if they get their act together but I don't think theres any future in it, especially with the NA server coming out soon, when the EU server is already pretty empty. If the "expansion" actually addresses the main problems then there might be a chance but I have the feeling its going to be too little too late.

I think they should keep what they have with wow going. Cus I mean, I can only see it getting more popular. And the graphics are the type that last forever.

What they should do is create a new more hardcore MMO. But do it really well. So therefore, not only do they have the easy MMO audience covered, they have the true gamers MMO covered too. I bet they'd do an awesome job. Somthing PvP orientated.

I dont think Blizzard would risk doing that, if it works well, milk it. which is what WoW is doing. If anything they'll just change the genre.
