Just a heads up for anyone interested in this new MMO that takes inspiration from the Granddady of all MMORPG's, Ultima Online. The first Beta Preview was released today by an Italian MMORPG website who got to visit the devs in Greece with no NDA restrictions for their time there. Theres a load of screenshots on the site and some text translated to English. They are done with default ingame settings so they might look better on max. Gameplay sounds superb though. It seems this game is finally on its way out, hopefully before Christmas, maybe sooner.

Images are a bit clearer on their website but I've put a few here from my webspace:

Remember to sign up for beta from the Darkfall website if you haven't ..you might get in if you're lucky but Open Beta won't be long if they're expecting to get it out in 2008..they actually said a while ago that open beta will have finished by early December.

Looks similar to most of the other mmo's but I'll sign up for the beta, although that page is down.

When are we going to get something almost identical to SWG but an fps version..

Hmm website is up for me mate

Also check the beta quotes from testers here for more detail: http://forums.darkfallonline.com/showthread.php?t=82111

The thing that separates this from the other MMO's imo is this:

Sandbox style meaning you can go anywhere in the world from the moment you start

You can attack anyone you want (although you may become an outlaw), so its truly full FFA PVP

Not an item based game, but mostly player skill and tactics. When you die your stuff is dropped and can be taken by whoever killed you. So items aren't so important.

No levels but skills you train so kind of like Oblivion but without the levels

FPS style combat so its all in realtime and you have to aim attacks..and manually block

Player run cities (sieges!), player houses, ship warfare, everything in gameworld can be crafted by players..loads of crafting options available like mining, tree cutting, fishing, armour making etc..probably more. Sounds like a very deep game

Ohh perhaps I should have read the site properly. Some of those features does sound cool.
will deff have to give this a try.

Been looking forward to this game for a long time. Now it looks like it will be out soon which is rather exiting!

I am the leader of a Mahirim only clan, check my sig!

Been watching this for awhile, sounds like the first MMORPG for awhile that's really offering something different.

Yeah, as Melipone said, what Darkfall is aiming to achieve is virtually nothing like most other MMOs. Couldnt be further different if they tried, much more like a UO style of game.

First looked at this game back in 2002, I truly truly hope that it can recapture some of the brilliance of UO (best MMO ever imo). Anything which offers something better than all the level, non-social, restricted gameplay crap of so called "modern" MMOs is very appealling to me.

My biggest fear for the game though is that the MMO userbase has changed so much since the superb UO that the "modern" MMO player just wouldnt be able to cope and handle an MMO world like UO/Darkfall. I hope they stick to their guns though and dont get swayed by the masses

a lot of social/casual players will hate this and start shouting "MAKE THEM STOP IT!" You lose all your equipment when you die, no holds barred pvp, relentless terrain, many many skills, attacking relies on where you're aiming at...

3D UO :p Different by emulating the first real MMORPG (and not the first 3D one for a change).

i heard the game was in development for more then 8 years ? looks outdated tbh

Yeah they started developing it several years ago. Graphically it does look old, but then you have to compromise on something when it has as many features as it does (doing things that no other MMO has done since UO, and even some things which UO didnt do).

Personally I dont give a damn about graphics (if I did I wouldnt still consider UO to have been the best MMO I ever played :D , and civilisation one of the best strategies) , if they can get the features they are aiming for in the game, and make it nearly a 3D UO type of game instead of the limited gameplay of the modern MMOs I will be very happy indeed to give it a try.

I just hope that they stick to their aims and dont bow to the whining masses. Or better still I hope the whining masses just dont try it out :)

In what way does it look dated? Some of the more recent screenshots look comparable to or better than most other MMOs out today and they are taking at default settings not max.

Gameplay wise, from what we have seen and heard, Darkfall looks like it is going to be by far the best MMO ever made, if you like that kind of thing. Graphics don't even come into that and it is in fact a bonus that they are pretty good!

But then I guess everyone expects all new games to compare to Crysis these days.

It looks about as good as wow, wow came out in 2005 and the graphics weren't particularly top notch then. No one is wanting crysis level graphics, just something not from 2004/2005.

Personally I'm not too bothered by graphics, but when you think it already looks dated and if you're planning on still playing it in 2/3 years time, its going to look extremely dated.

What they are doing with the gameplay sounds good, sounds like a mix between wow and eve, if done right it could be good, I for one though want to play in an original imaginative world and I'm ruddy sick of all MMOs being based in basically the same universe (orcs, dwarves & elves), I like to see a little more imagination and I don't like to look ad muddy medevial color palletes.

Agreed. The "medieval fantasy" genre is overcrowded as it is. Original setting + that gameplay = win.
