Darkfall Preview (MMORPG)

Personally I'm not too bothered by graphics, but when you think it already looks dated and if you're planning on still playing it in 2/3 years time, its going to look extremely dated

Doesnt bother me in the slightest, I played UO long after it was considered to look "dated". In fact I play quite a lot of games which look dated (in many genres) due to their gameplay.

It looks about as good as wow, wow came out in 2005 and the graphics weren't particularly top notch then. No one is wanting crysis level graphics, just something not from 2004/2005.

What they are doing with the gameplay sounds good, sounds like a mix between wow and eve, if done right it could be good, I for one though want to play in an original imaginative world and I'm ruddy sick of all MMOs being based in basically the same universe (orcs, dwarves & elves), I like to see a little more imagination and I don't like to look ad muddy medevial color palletes.

Wow

Looks a fair bit better than anything from WoW to me. Don't forget some of the screenshots are old, some are taking and default settings or lower, etc.

As for the gameplay... it's nothing like WoW or EVE. It's skill not level based like EVE but that's about the only resemblance, besides from the brutal PvP. It's mainly a first person game, with only melee combat being in third person and is fully real-time twitch based, not dice based like WoW and EVE, ie you don't lock on you have to actually aim and projectiles travel properly not instantly like in WoW etc.

The world style to me is irrelevant, as are the graphics, so long as the game map itself is fun to explore. Once you have got used to it over several hundred hours playtime it all looks the same anyway, in any game!

Age of Conan proved (once again) that graphics dont make a game. As long as they are passable (and it looks like they are) this game should have the MMORPG gameplay that ive been waiting for (since Ultima Online and Asherons Call). Seriously, since UO and AC MMMORPG's have just gone backwards, getting simpler and simpler. Hopefully this game can inject some life back into the genre by being different.

these days its hard to see if mmo is good they always hype the game. and it ends up failing. tobula rasa / age of conan and more...

end of the day u have to try it yourself.

waits for Aeon.

yes i like korean mmorpg and i never played wow

edit: registered for beta see how good it is

I get your point in general, but it's a lot to do with personal taste, but IMO those shots you linked are publicity type shots, a fairer comparison would be;

If darkfall has a free trial, I might give it a go, and I don't agree at all that the world doesn't matter to a MMORPG, the world you play in is the very essence of the game, it is a "role playing" game, and I'm just sick of playing the role of a superhero in an unimaginative "fantasy" world of years past. At least wow infused some technology into the mix, with gnomes etc. Personally I prefer games set in the future, because they tend to have more imagination and a different world to immerse yourself into. Of course if there is a futuristic type game with terrible gameplay (i'm looking at you TR) then I'm not going to play it either.

If the graphics turn out as nice as they are in the shots you posted I'd at least be impressed with the graphics then, are there any movies of the game in action?

I also reserve the right to change my mind at any time.

Personally I quite like the style they've gone for. Can't say the actual graphics are as good as say AoC, but I like the actual style and realistic touch. You can have the best graphics in the world but implement them poorly by detracting from the realism with over the top bloom (Oblivion etc), or by going for a too cartoony a look. As long as they have nice details then Ill be as immersed as if they have the most realistic/top of the range engine possible. Thats just me though I guess..I could get immersed into the world of Ultima Online like 10 years ago :D , mostly due to the details and feeling of realism from the game mechanics. This to me could be the most immersive experience even with graphics out of date by 5 years as long as it has the details right.

Think of AoC graphics in a 100vs100 siege on a city...it would just be wasted as you'd chug along at like 10FPS.

Anyway onto the actual game :) . One of the other cool things about it is the real world tactics you can use. Theres going to be clans playing like its Total War :D because you have body blocking and weapons have actual range etc. Theres a nice physics engine which will encourage this stuff. Imagine holding the high ground with 100 of your clan, some archers at the back maybe, polearms at the sides, dwarves at short range at the front (because of friendly fire from the arrows :D) etc. Then you have a small cavalry unit hiding below you ready to hit the enemy at the right moment. Should be fun..but the smaller scale stuff is what i'll be involved in most of the time I think, especially 1v1. Weather also has an impact, so people might check the weather forecast and attack during rain or night time etc

This video should give you a few ideas of what you can do in DF, but it contains some things from the old engine (its on the second one now I think)

There was an official video released by them also in August in 6 parts..Worth watching em but I'll put part 6 which shows a city being attacked (check out the siege equipment :D hover tanks/Warhalks lol)

Hello there :)

Thanks a million for the links and info ;), a long time player of DAOC i realy miss the action these days of playing online :(

Watched the video, had a look around the forum and liked what i was reading so i signed up and put in for a beta account :D

Having beta tested Wowhammer :p i knew it was not gonna be for me but this game got my interest again

Darkfall and Mortal Online are aiming at the same segment of the MMO playing market. Hopefully one of them will succeed.

ffs, more orcs, dwarves and elves...

I suggest you take a look at upcoming MMO called Earthrise.

Not an item based game, but mostly player skill and tactics. When you die your stuff is dropped and can be taken by whoever killed you. So items aren't so important.

YEAH!!! MIR is back - in 3D lol...

signed up, looks ok, will give it a go at least.

If it's taken 8 years of development time, they clearly don't have the workforce to support this game in the future. I refuse to play indie MMO's now, because they haven't got the financial backing, experience or support sufficient for a MMO.

Nice as the idea is, if they don't get the sub numbers, it will die fast. See Vanguard for more details.

They are a small developer but if it suceeds it will get the more staff. IF.

Believe it not, but they are funding by the government, well not in full but they get grants or something. Could just be some BS I heard tho I guess

Who knows, anything is possible. Let us not forget that Eve Online was in development for 6 years and was originally started by a handful of people. Its still doing fine.

CCP (EvE's Devs) had a solid business plan. Just look at their website, the infrastructure around the game, the support, forums, payment options, updates. It's flawless, best on the market and you could say supercedes the game itself. They knew their audience and target market penetration well before hand and they have a business model for years into the future.

Darkfall; i get the impression, that it's just a few guys working out of an old office trying to accomplish something that may be beyond their means. The game is only known by some keen followers and veteran MMO's. The same can be said for Chronicles of Spellborn, who i can't seem to find on any retailer website for pre-orders.

Bit too soon to judge them imo. Eve has been out for a long time, and have basically a monopoly on their market. They aren't flawless themselves though. Their PR isn't always the best, and they had a scandal that was proven which involved a dev giving billions and billions of stuff to a certain Alliance (just search t20 Eve Online). They also took a long time to develop the game, with very little content when it first went live. I played in Beta and theres basically asteroids and some rats, a broken market and not much else. And that was like a month before release. DF are really trying to make their game 10/10 on release rather than develop it some time after release, which is why they've held it back so long I think.

I think the DF devs like to keep out of the community and just develop their own game with their own vision, which is great. PR isn't their strong point, but I don't care if when I play its amazing. I think theres a market for this time of game done right . The only alternative is Eve Online really and thats in space and has no player skill involved (well not much imo). But the fact Eve has like 25k players online most days shows how successful a game less "dumbed down" can be

To make a fair comparison I would need a copy of their website in 2002, prior to EvEs release. Wouldnt be fair of me to compare a website 5 years post release to one pre-release.

Not saying that Darkfall will be any good, just saying I am willing to give it the benefit of a chance to fall over in front of me rather than dismissing it out of hand without that benefit.
