Dashcams!

I'm a bit out of the loop with the latest dashcams, but maybe have a look at a Mobius Action Camera. I ran one as a dashcam in my car for most of the reasons above - I definitely didn't want something big with a screen on the back of it. Attached it to the solid 3M mount, tucked it up behind the rear view mirror and forgot about it most of the time. No silly light grey or chrome accents on it to make it obvious in the windscreen either. Time/date/speed can be removed using a program on a PC (with the camera connected via USB) and all other settings are adjusted this way as well, but you don't have to connect it to the program as it will work out of the box. Apparently the built-in battery lasts up to 2 hours although I never used it that way.

Downsides are it is only 1080p at 30fps or 720p at 60fps and I'm not sure if it conforms to your power requirements (or how well it would work on a bike), worth a look anyway. Night time footage is fine in built up areas, but where I am with barely any street lighting it isn't great. Mine ran flawlessly for 4/5 years and never skipped a beat until a year or so ago when the summer heat must have finally got to it and warped the plastic casing so it no longer slots in to the mount properly, but I'd take a guess that it would still record footage fine. Definitely worth a quick look as it instantly came to mind when reading your requirements, but I'm not sure how well/if it will work on a bike as it doesn't have image stabilisation so you'll want to check video quality, etc. as well.

A fair few YouTube videos make the footage look mediocre, but it could just be how people render the footage and YouTube in general as mine looked good when playing directly from the PC. I was pretty impressed for under £100 and to put it another way I've not been tempted to replace it because without spending £200+ the only camera I've come across with better video quality is the Viofo A119/129, but that is irrelevant.

Anyone running theBlackvue DR900S-2CH 4k? Be nice to hear from someone running one?

My son has this, cost him around £650 installed and it’s been nothing but trouble, he’s had it changed twice and now the warranty has run out so he’s a bit worried. The first time it developed a fault and just stopped recording for quite a while before he realised, the second time the replacement kept overheating. Apparently, they have updated it to fix the overheating issue but they refused to replace his one with the updated model. Also the support was a real pain, it took ages and lots of calls, reminders and repeating the issue for them to sort things out.

Having said all the above his current replacement is working fine, for the time being! Also with the front cam being 4K nighttime clips aren’t as good as say a 1440p cam.

Cheers man interesting as I'd heard about heating problems myself so, nice to see someone confirms it. Yeah read that the 4k isn't as good at night... food for thought. Cheers.

I've got a Viofo A119 V3 which is a 1440p dashcam and the night time clips it produces are much better than my sons but in the daytime his dashcams wipes and flushes mine down the pan :D That's not to say the Viofo is bad as it is a pretty good cam.

maybe, you have a switched live and a continuous live ones
google your car and dashcam etc to find the correct one, or use your owners club website, might help
Possibly ? When you switch the ignition off does the camera screen flash up "parking mode recording" then go blank ?

Works been a bit chaotic for both of us so not had a chance to sort this until this evening, plus I just renewed her insurance and its given a discount for having a dashcam.

Bit of troubleshooting I've done:

When I turn the ignition off I get no entering parking mode screen, the red light stays continuous and get the screen timeout countdown and it continues recording there's no difference between ignition on and off mode, now this leads me to believe I've got the wiring on two live connections?

Best resource for checking fuses? I took the ones I'm currently using off a Tiguan forum but I think they are wrong.

How long are you waiting? My Viofo A119v3, can't verify as I just power mine off a cigar lighter but from what I've read it won't enter parking mode until something like 90 seconds after the power to the accessory wire drops.

yeah you have yours wires crossed (no pun intended)

my dashcam, like others have said goes into parking mode when ignition is switched off

this is because its wired in correctly

should be 3 wires

1. Ground
2. Continuous Live (positive 12v for power)
3. Switched Live (this is the wire that switches off with ignition)

What camera and what car is it ?

we might be able to find out how to wire it up

Certainly looks that way, going to open it up tonight and double check, it's a Garmin 66w on a 2012 VW Tiguan.

also found this video on YT, i didn't listen etc, but you get the idea (just look at the fuse part)

found this one as well :

Top man appreciate your help, pretty sure the forum post is in relation to the mk 2 which has a different fuseboard layout but that last video looks like its the one to check.

i would personally look in your manual and look for anything like Wipers, as they will be "switched ignition" and put the "ACC" fuse tap into there

12v then becomes easier to Fuse Tap into

Anyone with a Mercedes found a fuse tap that fits well? I bought some generic ones from Amazon but they don't fit into the Mercedes fuse box very well due to the 'clip'. Is it a case of taking a stanley to it?
