hi, someone just sent me a .dat file in an email and said 'could you please fill the form out' it was in response to a work placement year so it's not anything bad.

The question is what forms use that format?

thanks.

I'd try notepad first, even if it doesn't work you should have a rather cool splurge of random characters.

Actually .dat's are pretty much anything. Click here for detailed information.

your not using lotus notes by any chance are you

What were you expecting? a form?

I word rename it to .doc and try Word, is that most likely.

Is normally caused by someone sending an email in Rich Text format rather than HTML or Plain Text.

yeah if it is a dat file in a VCD then i would suggest VLC player.

Is it a winmail.dat file?

When an end user sends mail to the Internet from an Exchange Windows or Outlook client, a file attachment called Winmail.dat may be automatically added to the end of the message if the recipient's client cannot receive messages in Rich Text Format (RTF). The Winmail.dat file contains Exchange Server RTF information for the message, and may appear to the recipient as a binary file. It is not useful to non-Exchange Server recipients.

The fact it's a form and that it came by email should be enough to tell you that it isnt a VCD format.

never said it was VCD?

oddjob, that's the one :) So basically it's no use to me?

Just rename the file to .doc instead of .dat

And you will be able to open it in Word.

and lol I wasnt saying you said it was VCD, I was pointing out to the others that what you had aid in the first post indicated it couldnt be a VCD.
