David Beckham is set to retire from football, bringing an end to a glittering career on the field.
Since his debut for Manchester United two decades ago, the 38-year-old has emerged as arguably the most iconic sportsman of his generation, captaining his country, collecting 115 caps, and celebrated as a champion in four different countries - the only British footballer in history to do so.

Such a brilliant player and an excellent career!

Id have loved to see him play for England one last time!

Have to sneak this in before it gets moved to The Football Stadium - top pro and wish more players were like him. Great memories of him coming back to OT with Milan.

Shame this will be moved to football tbh, he a top sportsman who sets an example for all, not just those who play football.

A great pro in my opinion!

Not the fastest or the best tackler in the game but amazing passing and a fantastic work ethic!

An amazing career really. An even more amazing piece of marketing.

Never the best player in any side he ever played in except perhaps Galaxy. Never the best player in even the England side and lived off the work he put in for the greece game.

Yet somehow they managed to forge and enormous amount of money from such a dull personality and keep it going. You can't argue with his work ethic in training and getting the most out of the skills he did have :)

When Fergie retired they had a load of famous quotes thrown about and his Beckham one was very apt:

David Beckham is Britain’s finest striker of a football not because of God-given talent but because he practises with a relentless application that the vast majority of less gifted players wouldn’t contemplate.

I'd argue there were probably a lot of more gifted players who didn't put as much work as him in as well. A great ambassador for the game as well - even if he's not the most intelligent or articulate sportsmen, you couldn't deny his love of the game or desire to do well on the pitch, despite his high-profile life off it.

Was he not the first person (footballer) to sign with Simon Fuller? The two of them created the finest marketing team in the world really! I'm pretty sure even today he is still the highest paid footballer (not just based on salary)

Amazing person, has given a lot to the sport and a name that will be in people's minds for many years.

A shame we did not see the last 7/8 years of his playing days tbh.

He is another legend 20 years in the game at top level is good going

Still the only player I wish we'd never sold (well him and Ronaldo but we had little choice with him). should have been a United lifer such is his love for the club :(

Was glad when he stopped playing for England. For all the adulation he gets he was an extremely limited player. The kind of player for some reason England fans love and wins over 100 caps. Part of the reason England aren't very good.
