David Cameron is going to try and ban encryption in Britain

So wait, if I use Snapchat when it's "banned" what's going to happen to me?

Nothing but none of the data you transfer will be private...from anybody with enough knowledge to packet sniff. Bad guys, the Government (probably bad guys too), your neighbour....your neighbours dog.

That's on the basis of Snapchat and WhatsApp actually losing encryption, rather than becoming "banned".

Classic political tactics.

Disguise removing freedoms as "against terrorism" so those who don't understand the implications vote in their favor.

I doubt he will succeed as too many companies require this and it would result in their definite relocation elsewhere causing job loss/effects on the economy.

The companies involved aren't based in the UK to begin with.

Oh, well in that case we have a slight issue then as most of the non tech-savvy British public will probably vote for it because "terrorism is bad and is more important than anything else"

British public don't get a say - we've elected MPs to represent us in parliament and it's up to them to decide what the law of the land should be.

ID cards would be useful if we wanted to stop the hordes of illegal immigrants in Calais as they're useful in combatting the black economy.

Then it's only a matter of time until you have Fingermen assaulting your wimminz!

I am coming into this a bit late and it may have been discussed already but what happens with things like on-line banking or my companies various secure portals for remote access or flexible workers personal details etc? Everything just becomes plain text?

Just the other countries you've got to worry about *cough* USA *cough*

Why do I have to worry about the USA? The USA doesn't have ID cards does it?

If you look past the hysterical thread title, this is just about wanting US companies like Facebook, Google etc to help the UK security services. The UK banks already co-operate when a court warrant is presented so there's no beef with them.

It's not a disguise at all, the reason is quite honest. It's not as if its being done as an evil secret plot to arrest people plotting to vote Labour at the next election. It is to help fight terrorism.

However the issue is whether its a rational and justified measure, which I am not so sure it is.

Be against it because it's draconian not because you want to pretend it's some sort of nasty plot to steal freedoms for no reason other than stealing freedoms.

This nonsense that it's all some sort of lie to convince the sheeple undermines the often good arguments why it shouldn't happen as it quite easily allows for those who are against the idea to be dismissed as tin foil hat wearers.

I don't really believe the terrorism excuse is credible, stopping law-breaking in general yes, the government have introduced absurd laws over the last few years that criminalise good honest people, but the terrorist threat is not really there to begin with.

so where the surveillance laws but then they ended up being used to have the police stake out peoples houses all day to check if they lived in the right catchment area for the school they sent their children to.

or to follow dog walkers to catch them not picking up poop.

both huge wastes of police time which is what happens when you give idiots in local government or government control over police time.
