David Cameron is going to try and ban encryption in Britain

Sometimes I wonder if you are having a laugh or just really are talking form such an uninformed standpoint... you've seen nothing to suggest ISIS have technologically (or even militarily) skilled people? They have a dedicated cyber division, Google it!

In fact, if you think that ISIS is not backed and organised by some very skilled people then you must be bonkers... the grunts they send to do the actual dirty work are essentially expendable fanatics, and no representation of the real power behind the group.

And what does this dedicated cyber division do? edit a few GoPro videos, upload them to ******** and then get their shills around the world to tweet propaganda - it's barely more sophisticated than a Russian troll factory.

I know full well that the Islamic State aren't to be underestimated - I even posted as much yesterday I think. There are some very capable and clever people running IS but it's the thicky grunts who carry out these atrocities and these are the ones using the encryted comms - to get recruited in the first place and then receiving aid in planning and carrying out their crimes.

Tor isn't illegal? It's even sponsored by US intelligence services.

I know it's not.

But you did reply:confused:

I do! And for sounding horns in built up areas, dog fouling, stubbing out cigarettes on the pavements, posting snotagramms on social media (especially against Heather Watson) the list is almost endless. :D

I believe that everyone should have their DNA taken and biometric information should be taken from everyone entering and leaving the country. I believe it will happen in the future, possibly NOT in my lifetime but it will happen.

I remember picking up on something years ago, purely hypothetical of course, where a person was asked if he could travel back in time, knowing what he does now, and see Adolph Hitler in a cradle could he have smothered knowing full well what the future would bring and the person said that they would have been unable to have smothered him.

I really don't mind GCHQ monitoring my Skype/Viber messages to my friends in Kenya, keeping a record of my text messages, reading my emails, listening to my phone calls as long as they can do it to everyone else and only use that information if they thought a crime had been committed or a crime might be committed. I'd trust them to do that.

I replied with a slightly different scenario because the original scenario was pointless to reply to.

That is very scary! At least I know where you stand on the issue, I just hope we never end up in a situation like that.:)

More than that. The original fundamentals were made by the U.S. Government. It wasn't originally designed for the public, it's either the marines or the navy, my memory fails me.

It came out of DARPA and the NRL and they were one of the original sponsors when it was open sourced. Not sure how much direct influence / sponsorship they provide anymore, but the US government has loads of businesses / holdings that it uses to invest in tech. The CIA or the NSA (can't remember which) was one of the largest investors early on in Facebook through it's companies. People complain about them harvesting emails, but post openly on Facebook. GG.

I think the original scenario has credence. If people in our own country (UK) are prepared to blow up trains in London (my wife was on the underground that day ten years ago) they might be prepared to behead people too. A Guardsman was killed (hacked down) in London in 2013.Those two terrorists could just as soon captured the guy, held him for a day or two and then killed him? I think my scenario has credence.

Yes, but if there was a really major terrorist attack: Dirty Nuclear Bombs on the M25 or suchlike then the government would probably instigate the measures I mentioned. Then people like me might consider that they had closed the door after the horse had bolted.

All your scenario is is a sadistic kidnap and murder, albeit terror oriented. No difference to any other murder or kidnap in my book. I don't believe police should have blanket access to everyone's communication on the off chance they find this is going to happen (the evidence suggests they don't have the resources to monitor known criminals/terrorists), let alone find the chatter of a crime like that.

Is this sentence not basically saying we (Government) are no longer going to follow the law, we are going to change it and control your lifes on a more granular level?

**** me, god how I hate we stayed in the union :( Civil Liberties are dying a death fast, the terrorists are truly winning as our society gets worse with the losses of more freedoms.

What about attacks on UK soil that are planned in foreign countries?

yea what about them? you think they are using whatsapp?
you realise how easy it is to encrypt text?

this says "hello" and took me 2 seconds using a program that's impossible to ban in the uk.

What next limit the internet to only uk servers? because it's impossible to stop people encrypting stuff unless they control the whole internet the government know nothing

You speak as if you are some sort of terrorism expert / specialist yet in reality you are no better than your typical daily fail or sun armchair expert!

Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.

Wow! The fear-mongering has worked a treat on you!!
I can't believe how impressionable and irrational many people are today, I'm heading off to West Africa in a couple of weeks and nearly everyone I tell think I'm crazy and keep going on about me catching ebola or having my head chopped off by some crazed terrorist

Well good on you for not listening to em! The news and media is all jumped up on negativity and their own hidden quite obvious agendas.
Watch news like RT instead.

I prefer sources like Vice and The Guardian as they tend to provide far less bias reporting and are among-st some the best investigative journalism out there imho!
That along with peer-reviewed papers and empirical data I find is the best way to come to an informed opinion on a subject!
The trick is to not get all your information from one source and process all information/data with a huge does of critical thinking and skepticism!
Outlets like Faux News/Sky, daily mail..etc are nothing but opinions and disingenuous propaganda which is hardly ever backed up with empirical data/evidence, sadly gullible people take it as gospel

You mean the state sponsored mouth piece channel of the Putin regime?

The same can be said for a lot of what the BBC put out these days!

Is he attempting to make up the shortfall in taxes by selling our data to the rest of the world. Because it's the only reason that could make any sense.

You can't ban encryption and you can't cover every piece of software in the world either. If they have to, I'm sure terrorists will put up with using something other than whatsapp etc. It will be a 5 minute faff for them but I'm sure they can manage it.

Well, if nothing else, this thread has prompted me to go and watch 1984 :p I've never seen the film or read the book...

It is a very dangerous quote. I read it to say that everyone is guilty and we will keep an eye on you to prove it.
