David Cameron 'orders new curbs on Internet Porn'

Can see it now

Phone up your ISP...
Hey, id like you to unblock the adult sites please.
Ok, to do that you will have to take the adult pack, and that will be an extra £10 per month as you will be using more bandwidth to stream from those kind of sites

:p

Come on dude,You know what i mean...child porn etc.

I know exactly what you mean, it means that you do feel that some Internet censorship is acceptable and even appropriate. The argument isn't if a line should be drawn but where the line should be drawn.

So gov call ISps to block porn, unless you ask for it not to be blocked
you then tell ISP dont block porn
ISP unblocks porn

Job done.

Where is the problem or use a proxy server.

The problem is now the ISP has a list of people who want access unblocked to porn. Its a straight up privacy issue where the Government is forcing its morals on the majority and making a list of those who don't agree. It'll shame some people into getting it blocked because they don't want to call up and ask or discuss the change with the other half.

The majority of users don't know of, or aren't away of proxy servers, and it wouldn't be a major suprise if the known ones start getting blocks themselves at some point in the future. Afterall if adults can use them, so can kids, and you need to think of the childen.

Finally, the vast majority of those polled (including a majority with childern) are against the idea. That in itself is more than enough reason for the legislation to be a problem. Considering one must only change it from opt-out to opt-in to make all the concerns go away, I don't see the problem with doing that.

Why does anyone have a problem with porn being blocked? Really, what are your objections? All things that require you to be over 18 are met with strict guidelines. If you go into a shop and try to buy alcohol looking under the age of 25, the cashier will ask you for id. Porn should be made much more difficult to access.

Porn is way too readily available. I just don't think it's right that kids view this stuff.

Nobody said it was right for kids to view it. Not our fault if people are crap parents and can't figure out how to stop their children from watching it.

Sharp objects are readily available for children to find, what should we do, ban sharp objects?

Not everyone is computer literate.

Well, I would think that parents would put sharp objects such as knives far out reach from children. It's not foolproof, though.

Funnily enough if you get ID'd for booze or fags you don't get your name placed on a database, do you?

Also, as has already been shown, filters often don't filter what they should and often filter what they should not. Got a website that's blocked but legal? Good luck finding out how to get it off whatever secret list it is on (this has actually already happened, a church website got blocked by Orange's mobile filter)

Finally, it is simply a slippery slope to state censorship. The problem of acessing pornography at an inappropriate age is easily solved by parents. No need to be computer literate. Just stick the bloody computer in the living room. That's what I did when my son was younger.

So?

Google exists for helping people find out how to do stuff that they don't know how to do.

Why isn't their legislation to make it mandatory that ISPs provide all customers with easy simple instructions on how to protect their children online? I'm on about protection from far more sinister things than porn.

Precisely, and people like Jason2 are falling for it hook, line and sinker.

I do agree with you, but the gov always side with the minorities.
It will happen, like it or not, so get over it, we are monitored 24/7

You can't really get an Internet connection without being an adult. When you provide said connection to a minor, its up to you (or rather their parents) to decide what is and is not appropriate for them. The laws you're refering to protect children at the point of sale.

I don't think it will happen but it's a damned shame it had to go on so long before common sense prevailed. Still, as far as I know the Government requires the bigger ISPs to track and hold certain types of data for at least two years, so you're right on the second point. Its easy to work around though and it's yet another war that the .gov can't really win (without going all china on us, at least).
