David De Gea - is he good enough?

Had an amazing game against Madrid but there are still mistakes in him.

they mentioned it last night, that the style of spanish play is more suited to his game, as it relies mostly on his shot stopping ability.

his issues from last night, again seemed to be with crosses, but if he's not getting training from someone that knows what there doing, hes going to have problems.

His big issue is that he doesn't command his box, otherwise he's a great shot stopper.

can't say that i think hes any worse than any other keepers in the prem commanding the area, not really required in spain and it depends on utd getting him trained.

don't think he'll be to bothered by outside comments, as long as fergies public backing is followed up in the background, also down to the likes of rio and vidic to boost his confidence as the experienced players at the back.

Oh David you're too good that's your problem son!!

Yeah he's a great shot stopper, what finalised it for me was that Athletico game last year, he was superb! He's definitely grown some balls this year, legendary keeper in the making potentially.

Guessing he'll take over the Spain spot as well pretty soon.

I cant see it being Rio and Vidic consistantly any longer (maybe for the odd game here and there).

De Gea has become a lot better at crosses in the last few games, actually charging through players to get the ball (which he really wasnt doing for the last 18 months or so).

As long as he can keep this positiveness through the summer and into next season - along with a consistant back 4 (it seems like YEARS since Utd had this, with Rio's back issues and then Vidic's knees/legs) , that will assist DDG a huge amount.

Considering how poor the United defence in front of him has been this season I think De Gea has performed brilliantly. How has performed better than him this season?

He has the same style of goalkeeping as I have when I play in goal (rarely anymore!)

I think that now, in a reasonably short space of time, he's transformed into an absolutely magnificent goalkeeper. There aren't many I'd swap him for (if any - taking age into account).

Funny reading some of the crap posted in here a while back, great keeper just needs rid of the bad facial hair he sports at times

Surely he's ahead of Valdes now? Can understand Reina keeping his spot due to personality but De Gea way better than Valdes and better than Reina for a while now.

Blinding save

That is a tremendous save.

Doesn't look like he even touched it.

Or am I blind?

Agree with this.

For me its the never ending quest for the holy, erm, Schmeichel.

De Gea is quality now - and is getting better all the time.

maybe not together, but one or the other is likely to be in the line up most games unless injuries crop up.

with there experience they are the ones that need to help him, along with other things to help him understand how to work with his central defenders/defence.

He's been ahead of Valdes for at least a couple of years in my book :)

I only watched a bit of him before joining united but looked better than Valdés to me then, in fact I don't rate Valdés at all.

This thread makes me wish we had club threads, would probably have decent discussions about more players as creating one for each player seems silly.

Rafael needs a thread, fun to watch and be interesting to see his stats, seems like such a little **** but I kinda like him :(

I don't know, I totally agree that he's now probably the Spanish number two, but I think that Reina is basically the Spanish cheerleader and will (until he's utterly terrible or retires) be joint second choice as he's certainly not bad and is very popular.

I think Valdés is a good keeper, but he's much more than just a keeper, he's almost a sweeper too and is fantastic at that, I always thought he's been over looked and unfairly highlighted as the weak point to Barcelona (remember everyone saying they need a better keeper?) but I always disagreed, I think he's a very good keeper, however, he's stated that he wants to move on so Barcelona will be after a new number one.

Also; re Samba Nev, Rafa has come on leaps and bounds and is so much fun to watch going forward, really dynamic and has a lot of flair, he still get's caught out far too easily in defence though, I'm excited to see Fabio return and get time (hopefully) so we can see how well he copes playing in the Manchester United side (playing in better sides brings the best out of players sometimes).

This all might be a little off topic slightly, but I'm very quietly excited about a few teams next year across Europe , I'm slightly less excited about Sheffield Wednesday but that mainly depends on us staying up this year :p.
