BBC news had an item yesterday, saying that the European Parliament has backed a proposal to stop the obligatory one hour time change twice per year.
From 2021 it’s proposed that all States choose either permanent Summer time, or permanent Winter time.
No doubt this is just a proposal, it will have to be debated and agreed, or not, as the case may be.
Deep joy I thought, I could stand permanent Summer time, but wait, aren’t we about to quit the club?
I can envisage still suffering the bi-annual clock changes here forever, as the soi-disant bunch who think that they know best, lead us whooping and cheering to the country that they’ll have got back, with no sinister “foreign” voices in our supermarkets any more.

Ha! I wouldn't call having to change the odd clock +/- an hour "suffering" - if it's that bad for you, just leave them and do some maths :D

Oh wait. I've just realised that as well as the deliberate stupidity of that post, I've also been equally stupid by mistake.

Oh well. I'll let it ride.

Should just have one time setting, GMT seems logical given where the timeline is. If businesses or schools want to adjust opening times then that is up to them, ditto to farmers etc...

Frankly most employers ought to offer flexitime so it shouldn’t matter whether GMT or BST is picked in that case - getting up earlier or later is your own choice. Granted some jobs do require coverage at certain times so can’t be so flexible.

(Technically it doesn’t matter if we carry on changing but it does simplify things if we just pick one)

Winter time all year round would be my choice. Brighter mornings are so much nicer.

But brighter evenings are more economical.

The whole idea (Especially during WW2 when energy consumption was critical) was to match daylight hours with "Most" of the general populations daily lives in order to reduce the need for heating and lighting homes and workplaces during the hours of darkness.

This is just as good an idea today as it was 70 years ago.
