Just a quick post to see if anyone would be interested in a meetup so we can all sit in a pub and drink beer while talking about SETI / Folding / Astronnomy / the youth of today as appropriate?

Obviously you'll need to be an active DC contributor and the location is open to discussion. I'd sugest Camberley as a good location but there may be some personal reasons for that so any other better options are welcome. I'm fairly sure that a far chunck of the regular DCers are in this sort of area.

Let me know if anyone is interested and I'll try to sort something out.

either the big smoke or somewhere here in surrey sound's like the most favoured so far, has anyong got any other possible locations. Reading's fairly easy to get to by train from most places and it is the location of the best pie shop in the world.

wrt the under age types, I'm not overly happy with the thought of being the organiser of any sort of event where there might be underage people and/or drinking going on for lots of reasons. As such I'd be happier if it was 18+ only. Sorry to the VALUABLE contributors who are not quite at that age, maybe we'll have another meet in a few years and it'd be good to see you then.

right , I'm back (I don't do internet at the weekend, real life gets in the way).

Reading seems like a popular choice.... or do we need a vote, I wasn't really anticipating such a big responce with poepl willing to travel long disatnces

if I'm going to set a dat / choice of dates, what do people prefer weekdays, fridays or saturdays?

Mr Beserker, a poll for the locations sounds like a good plan to me :D

Paul

right then, decision time....

I'll choose Reading as it's the easiest mainline station for me to get to and I'm a selfish bar steward like that

the options we have (well I have ;) )

Friday the 6th Oct
Saturday the 7th

Friday the 13th Oct
Saturday the 14th

and so on

any preferences?

I still can't get over the fact that people are willing to travel the length of the country to meet some strangers from an internet forum who all happen to run DC projects for the bestest team iin the world

Paul

we'll make it a weekend later on in October then, how about the 20/21st 27/28th ???

Beserker I think we're going to need a poll here or I'm going to make a decision and end up sat in the pub on my own :(

Paul

sorry for the lack of updates guys, I'm more than a bit snowed under at work at the moment (I'm still here working and will be for most of the weekend) It looks like the 28th is popular at the moment so perhaps we should set a closing date of say wednesday at which point we'll decide on the most popular date and go with that one?

as for flying around to make the meet up

Farnbrough and blackbushe airports are both geographically closer to reading than heathrow but the bus link will make heathrow by far the easiest way.

I'll be driving from Camberley to this event as well if anyone needs a lift en route

Paul

right then, pending a date desicion what do I (or someone with more time) need to do to 'organise' this thing

AND

what do people want to do, sit in a pub and talk?? something more exciting?

Decision in message

we'll go with the 28th then, it gives people more time. Would it be possible to get a definite (ish) number of people so I know what sort of venues to look at.

I'm kind of snowed under here at the moment so if anyone has any good ideas / venues don't be afraid to point them out to us all.

I'm always tempted by pie :D

right I'm off to convince infrastructure to buy me a crossfire'd dual x1900 PC

Paul

sorry to hear that you can't make it Stan :(

hopefully the distributed nature will mean that you can get a beer and a pie locally and then and join us via some 3G video wizardry? or perhaps next time round if there is one :D

If people could copy this post, add there names and paste again at the bottom of your post so I have a list of numbers.

sound's like a plan to me, as long as I don't have to install 10g again I'll be a happy DCer.

My only thought is that on a Sat night they will all get quite busy so we'll (or at least someone) will need to get there earlyish to garuntee a seat / seats/ space

I haven't found the pie shop. Not sure how far it is, or even if we still want to go there (plenty to do/eat/drink in the place I've already suggested).

I've been hearing today that the pie shop has aparently gone downhill somewhat and it's always busy (so we'd need to book) so it may well be easier to grab something in the oracle instead.

yeah, I'll report you to the TOcUkD&C moderator if you're not carefull ;)

there is a possiblity that I might have to cry off this meeting unfortunately ;( real life and work (35 hour week so far and it's only wednesday morning) are rearing there ugly head. I'll try and make it there, if someone who is going could pm me there mobile number I'll try and catch up with you a bit later in the afternoon.
