DCS:- Black Shark English Version Released!

Just fired this up (having brought it on release!), and wow it's a bit of a learning curve! I'm a competent pilot in LO and FC, but the flight dynamics have me struggling. I've turned game mode on for flight whilst I get to grips with the avionics. Otherwise I spend so much time fighting the aircraft that I never get anything else done!

Small piece of advice, do it the other way around. Learn to fly the thing before you even attempt to learn the avionics and weapon systems, otherwise you'll get nowhere fast.

Well I've spent a couple of hours, and I can't even get the thing steady enough to use the avionics!

Make sure you have the pitch, roll and yaw autopilot channels switched on at all times (IRL pilots HAVE to do this as well, pretty much all helos have auto pilot systems to dampen movement and stabilise the cab).

And remember to trim, trim, trim, trim and trim. Map the trim to you stick, and hold the trim everytime you make control adjustments, only release the trim when you are stabilised.

And just keep at it, it isn't a game, it's a 'SIM'. Don't expect to be able to master it in a couple of hours, it'll take months.

Have patience it'll become second nature soon enough.

In the meantime here is some helpful info. Ka-50 Autopilot Description and Operation

Trimming the Ka-50

Cheers Nate, I'll take a look at those.

Yes I have the autopilot on at all times, and have it mapped to a button on my 'collective' (throttle stick). I'm sure I can master it - I'm not out of control, it's the small movements and stabilisation that I'm struggling with. For example, I have the short tutorial by Parrabellum, which is basically take off, fly to a waypoint, autohover and setup the weapons, then pop up over a ridge and destroy some tanks. I can do everything with varying degrees of competancy, except the autohover and weapon setup! This is despite being able to do the autohover tutorial. I also find that I lose control - what starts off as a small yaw will leave me yo-yoing around the sky unless I am really careful. I don't think I'm being ham-fisted - I know the need to be gentle and not over correct. It just seems that the second I stop thinking about control (i.e. trying to get the weapons setup) the chopper decides to sling itself around the sky.

Perhaps I am trying to run before I can crawl. I did manage to land the bird in the centre circle in the small stadium at the airfield in the tutorial missions, so I know I'm not terrible ;)

Unfortunately these days I don't have months to master a game - I'm lucky if I get a couple of hours a week. At this rate, I'll have it sussed on a couple of years :p :(

Next time you fly, post up the track file from the mission you've just flown and I'll take a look at it for you. I may be able to pick out where you are going wrong.

The last mission you flown is always recorded in a file called LastMissionTrack.trk in the Back shark Temp folder.

Hi Nate long time no speak,
The D-Box route is way out of my league in terms of cost. I did fly BS in that very same set up that you posted there it was a great experience.
As for a FFB stick the only sensation you will feel is trim in BS.

Here's another idea for immersion, unfortunately it only works with Nvidia cards, but if you can get you hands on some Red Blue 3D glasses, the 3D effect is quite stunning.

I started trying to play this again after not playing for several months

Jeez , takes some getting used to , is the trim working differently now?

I notice there is a option for it in the settings

Yeah they changed it slightly, it is in the patch readme (below). You can switch it back to the old method by deselecting the box in the options

___________________________________________________
NEW TRIMMER IMPLEMENTATION

In addition to the original trimmer implementation, in which control input is disabled for 1 second to allow the player to quickly re-center his controls, a new method is included in version 1.0.1, using a different re-centering logic. In the new method, control input is disabled until the player returns the controls to their neutral position. This allows the player to re-center his controls smoothly, minimizing unwanted control input.

The new trimmer logic is optional and is selected ON by default upon installation of the patch. Selection of the trimmer implementation is available in the GAMEPLAY menu of the game options.

The Yaw (heading) autopilot channel functionality has also been redesigned. If the yaw rate is under 3 deg/sec. when the trimmer button is released, the autopilot will stabilize the helicopter heading. If the yaw rate is greater than 3 deg/sec., the autopilot will stabilize the yaw rate to maintain the turn.

I take it the learning curve on this is similar to LOMAC's?.

It's a game I really fancy getting into but I struggled to get my head around LOMAC and that kinda puts me off DCS a wee bit. :(

I'd be lying if I said it was. It is a much more detailed simulation than LOMAC, but that's the sort of thing I enjoy.

However, the difficulty is very scalable, there are Numerous aides to flying. For example the start up procedure here can be done with a single key press if you prefer. There is also the game mode, that can be flown with a just a joypad.

As mentioned/linked to in the last post the developers are planning an addon to Lock On that will improve Lock On graphically and give Multi-player compatibility between DCS and Lock On.

Wow this looks insane. I think Im gonna have to fit a collective and cyclic to my desk to play this! So good to see a balls-to-the-wall helo sim. Time to start saving for the DVD. Id rather have the thing on disc than download TBH. Something Ive found with all my games.

Ohhhhhh ATI & Eyefinity could not have come at a better time! TripleHead what TripleHead!

The retail DVD is just exactly the same 2 files you get in the DL on a disc, just DL it and burn in to a DVD. You'll end up with exactly the same thing and it'll probably work out cheaper (unless you can find the retail at an unusually low price of course).

I'm now hosting a Teamspeak 2 server for people who wish to fly co-op missions in Black Shark but don't want to join a Squad/Wing.

Full server details HERE

If anyone wants to fly, feel free to PM me here or over on ED's forums.
