DDR2 8GB Stability Issues

Hi all, ive been running my OCZ reapers (2x2Gb) fine at 1080mhz, I have just added anoth 2x2gb of Crucial dominators, which again will run fine at that speed on there own.

The problem is as soon as I boot with all 8gb I get a BSOD. I have upped the NB voltage and the Ram voltage which is now allowing me to at least boot into windows but even then I don't seem to be 100% stable. What else can I do? I'm currently running them at 5-5-5-18 and have just loosened to 5-6-6-20 but i'm still not 100%

The board is the Asus P5Q and a Q6600 @ 3.6

What settings should I be using? I don't mind running at 800mhz if it's 100% stable

Thanks

Many DDR2 setups struggle to run 4 sticks @ 1066+MHz. So dropping to 800Mhz is definitely a good move based on what you've said. You could probably regain some lost performance by tightening up to 4-4-4-12.

Unfortunately I have to second the above - I was completely unable to get my old C2D running 4x1gb happily at anything above 800 on the RAM (some amazing ballistix 667 that clocked up to 933 with just 2 sticks) :(

Any other tips for getting them stable

I have them at 5-7-7-22 and have been running prime for the last 45mins ok.

tbh i'm a little gutted they wont run any better but as long as they are stable I'm happy

Thanks for that it's good to know someone has this working ok.

My only though is that it's because I'm mixing modules or I have a board with a Northbridge which won't cope. I had a 2 1/2 hour prime, next time I booted the machine I got a 0x00000007E error, it's very hit and miss, even if I loosen the timings lots and up the NB it still won't always boot! :(

I think I will either have to look for a different board or a full set of identical memory.

You know, I think DDR2 800MHz with tight 4-4-4-12 timings is actually significantly better than 1066MHz with slack 7-7-7-24 timings...

Do some memory bench tests on both setups - the Everest Ultimate one is good.

Have not had time to look it up myself but.... do the reapers and the dominators both need the same voltage to run at 1066 speeds?

:)

Most '1066' modules (like my previous Ballistix kit) are overclocked 800 modules. So they typically require 2.1 - 2.2v I think. The ones I have now are 'proper' 1066 modules (the SPD table actually lists the speed as 1110MHz) so only need 1.8v.

i could be because they are missed matched different brands, i know they sometime they dont play nicely, mine run fine too and they are all ocz, and i have never had any problem

You say you've put more volts through the NB. What about the memory controller? I had to put an extra 0.3V through mine to get it running happily with 4*2GB

I'm not 100% sure which the memory controller is in the BIOS? Do you happen to know on the Asus boards? I thought it was under the NB but perhaps not
