About to buy my new system and a bit lost in terms of what RAM to buy. Looking at getting 2x16gb. How much difference does the ram speed make? what would be the standard?

I mainly do 3D work and simulations.

Are you going for Skylake or Haswell-E? (Z170 or X99)?

Since you are going dual channel I shall assume Skylake: Get the highest speed you can, Skylake loves high speed RAM.

Haswell-E doesn't benefit as much as Skylake from high RAM speeds - but it does have quad channel memory support so you will be wanting to get 4 sticks of RAM. - A 4x8gb kit (or 2, 2x8gb kits) would suit it fine.

You can get 3000MHz kits for almost the same price as 2400MHz kits so you may as well spend the extra couple of quid on the higher rated kits - That way, if something does benefit from the higher frequency, it will be able to utilise it.

But the bottom line is, 2400MHz will be fine and you won't be losing a lot of performance if you do opt for it.

Thanks, this cleared things up for me!!!
