dead HD?

just been given a friends laptop at work, running vista, it loads and looks like it will boot just before the welcome screen it makes beeeeeeeeep and then blue screens before rebooting.

I boot into bart pe and there is no hard drive showing, so i guess it's a gonna be the drive that has died.

But would a vista machine get as far as the boot screen with a dead HD?

i'm gonna try taking the drive out and trying to access it on a caddy

have you checked bios setitngs. i have some laptops at work that only like the SATA setting and when you put a newer OS on there it wants the IRRT setting, check that first its the same symptoms i see

how could that of changed though, i will have a look though
