Dead Space Is Awesome!!

SPOILER!!!

i am stuck on the part you have to destroy the mavity tethers on the astariod , i have got 2 of them but cant seem to find the other 2? looked everywhere, ?

Shame, Looks awasome and my type of game. Unfortuantly my HTPC with a 40" sammy only has a 8600gts, probably wont cut it at 1080x1920?

My PC upstairs has a 8800gt, will this be much better, will only be playing 1440x900 upstaires.

Just jump on the asteroid and walk to the other side of it. You have to be careful though, in order to avoid those two rings that move back and forth.

My laptop has a 8400gs 128mb init mate and seems to run very playable on medium with a few things off and still looks nice :) Running at 1280x800 too

how amazing is this !
im very impressed
missus out friday night, lights off headphones on and my own little halloween party !
amazing game

Very impressive game and so so scary infact I would say the scariest game I have played since Clive Barker's Undying.

Very impressive graphics and it seems well programmed. My 280 ia on maximum setting @ 1920 and is only using low power 3D clocks of 400 core. Possibly a bug with the driver but its totally smooth and is sitting at 61'c with the fan on minimum.

Makes you wonder if the mouse lag is intensional to add to the atmosphere.

Great game.

Lights off, Headphones on, wine drank, Dead Space finished...

What a cracking game!

Upgrades were well worth it, maxxed out the dmg as much as possible, you dont need to fill all sections on upgradin to get max dmg, also maxxed HP and had 90% of the Air too.
When you see the rooms you need to pay to open I was a bit dubious but theres normally a decet amount of ammo in them.

Cutter,Plasma Rifle,Chainsaw Thing and the Heavy weapon thing (EDIT: COntact Beam).
Alt fire with the plasma and heavy wep were life savers! BOOM, AoE!

Great fun, very well acted/voiced I think, for some reason reminded me of BioShock
The Zero Grav sections were a nice twist, took a little gettin used to, fun Contact BEaming thing as they leap for you in Zero Grav :p

Impossible mode unlocked, anyone finished it yet on that?

The Cutter was a well handy wep when it comes to certain mobs, easy to lop off parts when its in horizontal firing mode.
Remember things still blow up in sapce, many a time I wasted a loada ammo.... then saw explosive tubes round the corner >.>

I thought the pulse rifle was useless. You can take most enemies down with 3-4 precise hits using the plasma cutter.

It has to be said I thought the weapons let the game down a bit.

The best weapon is without doubt the one you start with, the Plasma Cutter. Why? The game tells you have you to cut the limbs off to do damage. The plasma cutter is precise and does more than enough damage to cut any limb off in 1-2 hits. Therefore, you don't really need any other guns.

That in itself wouldn't be so bad, if the other guns were decent. Trouble is, a lot of them aren't. Most of the alternate fire modes are junk, and don't do squat to your enemies.

That leaves primary fire mode to look at.

1. Ripper. Why would I use this over the plasma? It takes at lease twice the time to cut a limb than the Plasma Cutter (PC). Additionally, the blade doesn't always make good contact with the enemy and sometimes will simply pass right through, wasting ammo (and more importantly, stasis time).

I thought the Ripper was much less effective than the PC all round.

2. Flame-thrower. Firstly, this doesn't work in vacuums (obviously). All the others do.

Counter-intuitively, it seems to do very little splash/burn damage, instead working more like a gun. I had to aim at limbs to kill stuff just like I'd do with the PC, and I had to keep pressing the trigger. No ignite-and-run tactics possible.

Burns through ammo like crazy. All in all, considering how unlike a real flame-thrower this is, it's absolutely less effective than using your PC.

Alternate fire makes it work a bit more like it should have, and you can set up "bonfires" to roast your foes. Doesn't seem to stick to enemies tho, it sticks to the floor/wall instead.

3. Force Gun. I don't think I'm using this one right. It seems to zero damage to human-sized enemies, simply knocking them over instead. So, you can shoot and kill something, or you can knock it over. Hard choice, I know. Only use I can think of is insta-gibbing the little swarming creatures, but they aren't common enough to worry about really.

4. Contact beam. Aka, how the hell do I use this weapon? At first I thought it was a rocket launcher. But I haven't seen it do any splash damage, so it's more like Quake's rail gun.

Why bother? You still need to shoot off limbs to get kills. The PC does that. The PC has 10+ capacity, and ammo that stacks in 25s. This has ammo that stacks in 4. Additionally, it takes time to charge.

Could there be any more reasons not to use this weapon? Well yes, actually. The alternate fire mode is so pants, it only hits enemies that are close enough to hug, and in testing didn't kill anything in one hit. So you'd have to let your enemies close to melee range more than once to use it. And you'd burn through med-kits like crazy.

Crap gun, use the PC instead.

Really, this feels like a design conflict that should have been addressed at the design stage.

On one hand, the devs decided that it'd be cool to force players to kill by dismemberment.

On the [o]other[/i] hand, they wanted to implement a bunch of guns that don't dismember very well. Guns that would have worked well in a traditional shooter, but can't work here because doing damage to the body is ineffective.

tl;dr version: almost all the guns suck because they're worse than the first weapon the player finds.

Contact beam is great for the tentacly things wth yellow bits on them, single charge = boom

PC yeah great fun.

Plasma Rifle, nice n fast for when theres more than one enemy, shreds thru multiple mobs easily.

Chainsaw thing, worked just as well as the PC using both primary and secondar fire is awesome for long range lopping. Yeah primary fire takes a bit gettin used to.

Flamethrower, not used.
Line gun thing, not used. (This makes mines?)

Flamethrower isnt that great really. It's alright against the smaller things, but the larger enemies just shrug it off. The fire doesnt seem to slow them down.

The Line gun is similar to the plasma cutter, just a lot wider spread of fire, and a lot slower. Havent tried the mines though, i don't run away from the evils :D

The Line Gun is pretty awesome, fire it at several enemies, just below the hips and it tears through them, the mine is also fairly useful in the later stages.

The Pulse Rifle is a sort of all purpose weapon, great for nearly every situation, especially the smaller buggers and those hyper fast monsters.

That said, my Line Gun and Pulse Rifle are heavily upgraded, so it may be different for other people.

The mines are on a fixed timer, and don't seem to want to attach directly to an enemy (for "tag, you're it!" fun).

Because most enemies are rather fast, a timed mine doesn't really work in practice.

With some effort and practice it might be possible to get reasonably good at using the mines... but again, when many other methods of killing are more effective, you'd probably get bored of it real fast.

I was gonna avoid this game because of what people were saying about mouse keyboard controls,i was expecting another res4 or alone in the dark and as i absolutly refuse to use a joypad, but got it anyway and i really can't fault the controls.
Great graphics, smooth framerates maxed out and iv'e got the day off to get into it:D

Tried it last night, got to the part just after you move the tram but indeed the controls with KB/mouse aren't right, the guy just moves too slowly/sluggish and it feels like he is 'in the way' all the time blocking my view.

I will try it with a PS3 controller again to see if that helps.

Did you do the 'fix' by turning off V-Sync in the game and then enabling it within Rivatuner? That will make things more responsive but I feel that you don't need twitch controls in this game anyway as it's not a true shooter. I thought I wouldn't care for the over the shoulder pov but have found that it suits the game.

Anyway, hope you get on better with the controller cos it's well worth playing.

Before playing I turned off V-Sync, after playing a few minutes I saw the framerate was always above 80fps so decided to turn on V-Sync but this did not work as the framerate stayed well above 60fps

Just don't turn it on? I see no tearing issues worth moaning about with it off as the fps is always above 60 anyway.
