Death/Dying

Well, let's start with the fundamental shift. Let's assume that we're no longer mortal, or at least don't have the problems which or current short life spans present.

Do you not agree that would create a whole new value shift in society? People's outlooks, wants and lifestyle dynamics all completely change. Without death, would society stagnate or improve? Take for example careers: if people never die, how would others ever progress? Would a lack of mortality concentrate wealth and power more than it currently is?

Indeed, it's readily observable that society progresses with each new generation that comes to be as it challenges the status quo. How would reduced mortality in the long term affect societal shift?

I believe without mortality being a pressing issue, it also frees people from some obligations. There would be for example, no concern for a 30, 40, or 50-something to return to university and retrain for a brand new field. As time is no longer short, people can experiment. Would knowledge become more specialised? Would there be more or less scientific breakthroughs? Would spiritual and philosophical growth and the pursuit of happiness become the new normal as opposed to generating profit and capital?

It's impossible to know how such an important change in the dynamic of the human condition will affect everything. We can make educated guesses in the very short term, but anything beyond that would be naive and foolish.

What I mean is, I think the controlling forces that run the world, e.g. rich families, would still have the power in their grasp, so I don't think much would change in the short term - with regard to intention / direction.

That I would agree with you on. Hopefully we can address that before we get to the mortality shift.

Im not scared of dying as long as it isnt a long drawn out process in pain ,Have seen a few people go that way and its horrible.

And i plan to live to 100 thats my goal .

Been there, done that. Dying doesn't bother me. I'll be dead so no pain or worry. If I was married or had kids it would be slightly different but I'd just make sure they were well looked after.

The pain involved in it - particularly in the head is completely another issue. Head injuries are life changing - the broken bones are a walk in the park considering.

I've achieved everything I could possibly have hoped for and my children are grown up and are being successful at what they want to do so I have no fear of dying.

I have the same belief as you, although I prefer the word "manifest" instead of "energy". For as long as your body is alive, the manifest, your being, lies inside your brain. After death, my belief is that your manifest will move on to another living being. As with before birth, there will be no recollection of previous lives. Be it human or an animal, you will be dealt a random number of chromosomes, and of course you will be dealt a random hand as to how life itself will unfold for you.

Probably a different debate here, but what happens to manifest if you teleport? Your body (incl. brain) is broken down into molecules then reassembled at the destination pod. Does the manifest survive that? If not, will you re-manifest as a newborn?

Manifest, energy, consciousness I think we're on about the same thing here.

I don't think your body is broken down and re-assembled, but rather it's just a vehicle for our consciousness ;)

I believe in the afterlife. I just think somehow it will be alright. The universe is a big place. Someone will get around to resurrecting me eventually at the least. Or something like that.

Sure just drop me a message before you die :p

I see death as a transition rather than an end. Why so negative guys? :p

I guess we'll find out sooner or later ;)

Not really...in a way I look forward to it tbh. A death which has significance would be my fantasy. Unfortunately don't think death is the end as reality I'm is far far bigger and more complex than our puny minds can comprehend tbh.

Also I'm probably bat **** nuts but the brain functions like a wormhole kinda I'm...there u go :D

The thoughts of eternal nothingness used to really trouble me, I've sort of grown to appreciate the inevitable and don't sit and dwell on it anymore.

What if death is just the beginning? I'm not on about it in a religious sense, but what if you do remember everything in your lifetime when you no longer exist in a body. Perhaps you go into another dimension?

That would be strange. It's something I've never really considered it before.

Scared of leaving people behind, which is why I am very happy with living right now and hope to live a long and full life (Grim Reaper take not). Kind of interested to find out what happens after death though, so I don't think I'll be lying on my death bed scared so to speak.

I don't understand peoples concept of wanting to live forever?

That's hell to me, all good things must come to an end as one would say.;)

Death, not so much. Suffering and loneliness, hell yeah.

I now work in a mortuary (started my new career about a month ago after many years of trying to crack it) and it has been constantly fascinating learning about death and the related processes. As a culture in the UK we are very sheltered from the reality of it which I don't think helps fears.

Totally agree, its a taboo subject which doesn't help at all. In most other countries they are far more relaxed about death and seeing the bodies.

I imagine it's much like before being born so no i don't fear it. As others have already pointed out it's the thousands of ways of suffering in the latter years/while dying that is the scary part.

See this is what is strange with me.

I have never seen a dead body, although a lot of people have died around me.
But I refuse to see the body, as I like the last memory of them to be when they where alive.

I dunno its just me.

Maybe if I don't see them dead, in my mind they are still alive. ;)

Its not just you, but its very much a product of our society. From a young age that's what's taught as the norm. If you grew up in a different country the chances are you would have the opposite view.

Sometimes you don't have to leave people behind - they dig you up and dress you for parties and parades.
