Decent CPU upgrade step for me.....

Good SSDs are now significantly faster than traditional hard drives now, (even faster than enterprise 15K SAS drives).

While it's true that an SSD will make many tasks run quicker (Loading games, running antivirus, faster swap file, faster boot), good SSDs are not cheap, and they won't improve your in game frame rate (a new GPU or CPU will), but will cut the time it takes to load the game.

I use a Samsung PB-22J 256G SSD, it is very fast, but as a gamer, I consider it a luxury as opposed to a fast CPU and GPU which I consider essential.

The 4gb ssd found in the eeepc is an entirely different beast to the new ocz ones. The former is essentially a usb stick, the latter is the future.

SSDs are a LOT faster than hard drives.

You learn something new every single day!!! :D

Either way, I'm thinking a CPU is the way to go for me! Just have to decide what, when and how much now!

I would do one of 2 things

get a Q9550 £171 but to be honest I would hold on to your money and wait a while and build an i7 system, that way your future proof and wont need to upgrade for a long time.

£171 for a quad that will age OR around £500 build an i7 system and futureproof yourself. Better of waiting now though to be honest im sure prices will drop more on the ram/mobo/i7 cpu.

Every time I see this I wince. You do not 'future proof' in computing, and I fail to see how anyone does not grasp this.

That reminds me that I should probably sell my TRUE

well i said future proof for a long while. everything is gonna be based on the 1366 socket now, so unless Intel pull a new CPU and a new Socket out of there ass for mainstream gamers the i7 setup will last a very long time.

Hell how long was the 775 socket out for? a long time?
it will be at least 5-6 years before intel even THINKS about a brand new mainstream CPU that requires whole new boards and lol maybe DDR4/5 Ram

The only exception to the 1366 socket is intel will probably make a different socket for multi processor boards/servers.

Like, say, the i5 with the new socket that's due this september?

Keep mindful that it's StevieP's thread and he is looking for help!

I can see a epic thread drift in progress! ;)

I've not had any kind of upgrade for quite a while and am running a core 2 duo 4300 currently overclocked by 50% to 2.7ghz
New Intel E5200 or used E8400 is my pennies worth and sell your old chip!

you do have a point but the i5's are basically cheaper versions of the i7.

So you have 2 routes to take cheaper i5 or the more expensive i7.

bit like high end and mid range GPU cards theres the more expensive and better card but theres the mid range card that is not far off but its cheaper.

Good business sense as Intel wants people to buy there CPU's but not everyone is willing to pay the premium for the i7's.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
back to the main topic, I still stand by what I say, if the i7 upgrade route is something you don't even want to consider I would go with the q9550, great CPU for the price.

Have a look at my thread here comparing E2000/4000/5000/6000/8000 series Core2Duos at various stages of clockspeed. All were done with the same components so are directly comparable.

Going by what I've read in the past in "pastymunchers" thread, theres no point getting an E5200/E5300 due to the L2 cache being the same as your E4300. I reckon you'd be better off getting at least and E6600 upwards due to the extra 2mb L2 cache that they have. Better still, if its for gaming then an e8400 or greater, for general stuff, encoding and photoshop benching then a Q6600 at least.

intel have pulled a new socket out of their A$$s, its the LGA1156 platform, coming very very soon. The CPUs are nehalem cores, but they only support dual channel DDR3, and have no support for multi socket platforms. Otherwsie known as the i5, it will be a very good gaming platform, and will have better bang for buck than the LGA1366 platform. Where you get an i7 920 @ 266GHz for ~£200 +~£200 for the motherboard, you'll be able to get a 3GHz i5 for ~£200, +£150 for the motherboard.
I'd expect these CPUs will clock just as well as the i7s as well.
