Decent filter system needed - Help please!

Guys,

I've just been told that they don't work very well on UWA? We will be doing most of our shots at 16/17mm?

Something to do with the whole filter not being polarised and the way the light will travel across the frame?

Anyone got any more info?

Thanks,
Jake

Apparently you won't get an even effect with anything wider than 24mm if I remember correctly.

Ok so I could pick up a cheapish one to use on the 24-70L to play about with then.

EDIT: Although what are my options for the 17-40?

Used mine on UWA, yes it is possible to get say the top left hand corner to be darker sky than say the right..... that can happen anyway due to where the sun maybe....
Best is to try it, check results on the screen..... balance any issue in PP if required...
(Note I've only tried on FF)

At 17mm you will see the edges of the filter holder as I discovered today. At around 22mm it goes away though.

Need a filter + holder that's much wider than normal!

This is something I discovered regarding my 12-24. I was hoping to do long exposure shots years ago now, but couldn't. Someone did post how to make a DIY filter holder for it though :D

For a CPL you just have a screw on filter so that isn't a problem for most lenses, except when you go super wider angle some filters on some lens just clip the outermost corners, which is why you can buy slim filters from the likes of B&W.

No the problem with CPLs is that they work best when shooting 90degess to the light source, e.g. Sun. On lenses that provided a foV wider than 90degress you get light and dark bands in the sky. The effects cries from barely noticeable to extremely strong depending on the sun and your angle. The thing is if you are getting very dark areas then you are probably setting the polarization too strong and should back-off a little.

This is rarely a big deal because ultra wide angle lenses are specialist tools anyway. Even on a dedicated landscape trip they will get used less than a 70-200mm.
