Decent flight sims

The go play on one of the online wars available for IL2, with the fact of mission planning being required it is a far more authentic expierience that WWII Online which just becomes arcade in comparison.

No offence but I highly doubt this is the case. 32 players online is never going to compete with the air and ground war that often has hundreds of players in a small area of the map in wwiiol. As for planning, you really need to be part of a squad in wwiiol, then theres planning aplenty, voice comms, ground/air coordination... anyway, each to his own.

IL2 is a superb game that I wouldn't attempt to slur it but I will defend WWII Online from your silly fanbois 'arcade by comparison' comment.

No, but you won't hold back from slurring me as a fanbois because I have a different opinion to you?

There is only one War you can join in WWIIO and it involves air, land and sea forces, and is played over a massive half scale map of Europe.

I'm only interested in the air war part and as such my comments stand, map size can be just as much a problem as a boon, vast empty fronts do not in my opinion make it at all authentic and in fact make it worse.

A war BTW that continues whether you are logged on or not.
As do IL2 Wars.

It not only requires mission planning for success, but has a strategic level with player led high commands.

You can retard the research, development and production of the enemies equipment through bombing their facilities. You can support ground forces as they attempt to capture the targets their high commands have targeted.
You can also deliver those forces in the form of paratroopers. Of course you can also play as infantry/armour/naval if you fancy a change ( I play mostly ground).
Nothing different from IL2 excepting being able to play as ground forces.

Obviously you can fly CAP if you'd prefer, or even non combat resupply missions. That's because there is a supply level to the game and you can't just spawn an endless number of your favourite warbird, even if you are eligible to fly it through the RPG layer. That means attrition is also an issue and if you lose your aircraft it's lost to your side forever.

Ditto IL2.

Then there is multi-crew. It's great to play as a tail gunner/bombardier in a 30 strong bombing run on German factories (I invariably play Allied).

Again, ditto IL2, maybe not the 30 strong group though :(

Now I can understand someone might prefer IL2 but to say it's 'a far more authentic experience' is unfounded and the 'arcade' comment is just nonsense.

Not at all, it's an opinion, that's all.

Doubt all you like, it's only my opinion and last time I played WWII Online there were never any battles anywhere near that size.

Actually that is far more 'authentic' than 30 people in a relative shoe box, what a strange thing to say. Not that busy skies (or ground) are not easy to find.
Yes, you may only be interesting in the air war, the point is that it's more authentic as a component of the whole war. Also...surely the fact that those paras you're flying, or the armour you are supporting below, are real people, must add to the 'authenticity' of the experience?

As do IL2 Wars.

Explain how these 24/7 wars work.

Nothing different from IL2 excepting being able to play as ground forces.

Again explain. Tell me the mechanics of the bombing and how it effects RDP and who are these ground forces you are supporting?

Ditto IL2.
Riiight. So how does this supply system work?

Again, ditto IL2, maybe not the 30 strong group though :(

OK, so you still claim that your relatively small bombing runs (as an example), are a 'far more authentic experience' than flying of in a large bomber formation from airfields in southern England to Germany? These runs can take hours. (That's not even to mention the differing consequences of these actions). Not only that, it makes WWIIO 'arcady by comparison'! I can understand someone liking one over the other but your comments are laughable really.

...it's only my opinion and last time I played WWII Online there were never any battles anywhere near that size (hundreds of players).

It's always been possible to find large battles in WWIIO, and now with brigade spawning, much more frequently so. To say never, is just not true.

How does Forgotten Skies work?
Forgotten Skies is a server based interface that uses our own campaign generator engine to generate missions based on the results of the last mission. Forgotten Skies runs a unique dogfight server software that tracks the mission time, aircraft availability, reports areas under attack, etc... Supply, oil, aircraft availability, with the ability to purchase new aircraft, etc... Forgotten Skies puts the control of the ground units in the commanders hands, allowing for more strategy and tactics in a very team oriented environment.
The frontlines move, display of troop, convoy, tanks can all be viewed on our detailed war map. Forgottenskies promotes a 'dead is dead' environment where pilots stats are tracked (persona) from mission to mission based on their success. If a pilot dies, so does his persona. This unique system rewards pilots for not only accomplishing their mission but also to do their best to survive to fight another battle.

Maybe you should try and remember I said one of the IL2 online wars and not IL2 itself.

Sounds really good for what it is. Having checked out their website I think you were being disingenius when you kept replying 'ditto' to those points (to put it politely). This is a very good sounding mission generated campaign system, with some great sounding features, but is not even remotely close to the WWII Online War simulation, in set-up, or in scope.

It also does nothing whatsoever to maintain your case that 'the mission planning being required it is a far more authentic experience than WWII Online which just becomes arcade in comparison.'

That was just a pure nonsense statement. Put the shovel down and step away from the hole.

Regarding OP's request for 'decent flight simulators' - anyone know are there any out there that accurately mimic flight dynamics (phugoid, SPO, dutch roll, slow spiral...)?

I apologise if this has already discussed itt, but it the whole thing seems to have turned into a bit of a flame war :)

I haven't tackled the definition of opinion, so no, I'm not (assuming you are repling to me).

Well seeing as how my comment (and to be clear, I'm talking about the arcade one) that so riled your fanboi attitude was pure opinion I'd suggest you make the effort :)

Anyway, I'm done with this, I've stated my opinion, the fact that it differs to yours is another matter.

TBH I wouldn't have a clue how accurate a particular sim is but most will claim to be. :) Do you want a combat sim particularly?

I know...isn't Dano naughty doing that? ;)

LMFAO...me have a fanboi attitude! Nice one.

I know what you said was an opinion, you don't have to keep repeating the fact.

It is also an opinion that you were talking rubbish when you said:

'The go play on one of the online wars available for IL2, with the fact of mission planning being required it is a far more authentic expierience that WWII Online which just becomes arcade in comparison.' (sic)

The fact that you have been unable to support your 'opinion' is strong evidence that mine is more accurate.

If you're looking for a WWII era sim, the IL2 series is the only real option. If you're interested in modern aircraft and have the time required to learn Falcon 4 is the way forward. And F4:Allied Force is still available in the shops and makes a good starting point.

Not the best graphics on earth, it is essentially a 10 year old game. However with all the work the community has put in, nothing beats it in terms of realism.

I'd love to get a simulator for combat planes, but data isn't available on modern combat aircraft enough to make a proper simulator. Simulators mostly use civilian aircraft- they're not top secret, I suppose. I'll look into this IL2 thing, though I doubt it's an accurate dynamics simulator! :P

Would a Helicopter do? This is about as real as it gets without millions of pounds worth of equipment.

Not 100% true, Falcon 4 simulates the F-16 including ALL systems apart from IFF as that is about the only classified system.

95% of cockpit switches are modelled and functional.

il2 1946 has very good physics, the up coming BoB is going to be superb.
