Decent Space games?

So I tried out X:Terran conflict ... my brain hurts that was so confusing , virtually no direction given or anything after the tutorial O_o maybe i missed something

Inspired by this thread I reinstalled my copy of Freelancer and...ughh :(

Mouse lagggggZZzzz

Apparently due to running it at 60fps on LCD/LED monitors. Searched Google for a few fixes, none of which worked. Uninstalled.

It does tend to drop you in the deep end :D

Have a google about for a "intro to X:TC" or "X:TC your first 5 hours" video/guide and it should set you on the right track.

Basically though, the first thing I do is think "Do I feel like being a pirate, a trader, or following the storyline?"

Just got back into Freespace 2 and while looking at the forums during lunch break today noticed this thread.

MV Mods installed and the ships are looking really good. Really top notch mod. Truly superb effort by the guys that have done it.

You missed installing Freespace 2 & SCP mod instead :D
Arguably the best singleplayer PC game released in a year starting with the number "1".

edit: It's one of those games where, on certain missions, you struggle to see how it could possibly be improved by any significant amount. The word "epic" has been seriously abused in recent years, but this has some truly EPIC moments (nobody will ever forget taking an absolute pasting before finally getting bailed out by a friendly cruiser warping in and blatting the enemy into oblivion with the multiple-orgasmic beam cannon) and "EPIC" is a word I've probably only used in reference to maybe a dozen games, ever.

I'm sat here in my chair rocking back and forth just thinking about it. ****, did I say that out loud?

If you want combat, and you are finding the X: series a bit overwhelming, then a linear game with excellent gameplay mechanics like FS2 is surely right up your street.

There was a storyline?
I just ended up being an exploring interstellar trader, I thought that was what the game was!

Sorry to hijack the thread but all of a sudden I'm thinking of trying Freespace 2 myself and I was wondering what sort of path it followed?

I mean I've seen the gameplay footage on Youtube but is the fighting pretty much it or is there trading and upgrading etc?

I tried Freelancer a good few years ago and liked it but the last time I tried it, it kept crashing when I went through certain jump gates so I was wondering whether this would be my kind of thing!

Freespace 2 is pretty much all fighting.
You can pick the ship & weapons used for most missions, but that's really it on the upgrading side of things.

FS2 excels on dogfighting, storyline and atmosphere.
If you want a more free-form 'RPG' type of spacesim then look elsewhere, it very much guides you down a path rather than letting you choose your destination, trading etc, but because of that they can deliver some fantastic set pieces.

There's a number of plots & story lines in X3:TC, it's down to the player wether or not they want to do them, i usually complete them just to get my hands on the UJD, Xenon hub, player HQ, & rare plot item ships.

X3, X3 TC are very rewarding but require a big effort to get up and running to the point where it becomes fun. If you lack the patience have a go at Star Conflict, which is basically War Thunder but with space ships. Very tight squad based tactical play. Lots of ship variety and free to play too

Any of you guys playing star citizen? Contemplating to buy a package and get into it early.....

I have a star citizen package, however currently there isn't a lot you can do. There will be the dog fighting alpha released soonish, but no firm date.

In term of other games you have stuff like:

The X series
Freelancer, starlancer, privateer
Wing commander series
Imperium Galactica series
Several early access games like Horizon on steam
Distant worlds
Many more

Some of these listed are more 4x spare empire games then dog fighting, but there all playing with space ships :p

My all time favourite space game is Homeworld 2. More like command and conquer in space but with a great campaign. Found it really immersive with great graphics particularly for 10+ years ago!

Currently playing the early access steam game Entropy. Still in the earl stages but the patches are making big improvements all the time. A decent range of ships and there will be lots of missions - they have just introduced passenger and cargo deliveries. Lots of trading and combat opportunities but will be even better when more players are on onboard.
