Decent Surround Sound Setup

Morning All,
I'm due to leave for work shortly,so I will keep this brief.Quick question for you experts out there :D What Surround Sound setup would you recommend,both for my PC with X-IF Extreme Music installed and Xbox 360 including HD-DVD add-on?
I currently have Altec Lansing Model 251 5.1 which I had for about three years and did me well.

Any Recommendations will be much appreciated.

lol pure quality and expensive. Not quite.
To the OP, how much are you willing to spend? If you want proper quality seperates, 5.1 with 5.1 amplifier you're looking at £1000 at the minimum, and sky's the limit.

However I managed to set-up a budget suround sound system a few years ago for £300 quid, Included a Yamaha RX-V350 and the Tannoy5.1FX pack.

Ok it didn't sound amazing, but was probably the best surround I could have got for the price new at the time.

But like what has been said, for quality + 5.1 you are going to have to be spending quite a bit of money, you can't avoid it, unless you drop your sights down a few levels and go for pure entry stuff.

Thanks for your feedback guys.However,I have no intension of spending £1000 on Surround Sound setup,but am willing to give up £200 of my hard earned cash. :eek:

What will £200 get me :confused:
 
Junk IMO (5.1)
£200 will get you budget stereo system, second hand. Scour around auction site for budget (but good make) stereo integrated amplifier and standmount speakers.

£200 quid will get you an entry level 5.1 surround amp and speaker package, which I'm sure you would be delighted with. I bought the Yamaha AV59 pack a while ago, and for the price I was (and still am) very pleased with it.

I would suggest going over to AV Forums and putting a post in the 'All in one' section, and see what the latest recommendations are for your budget.

Obviously a budget system won't sound as good as a £1000 system, but with my AV59 I felt it was money well spent. If you're an audiophile you may hate the sound, if you're an average bloke who's after a surround amp that sounds good for 200 quid then theres plenty of choice and value out there.

Just out of interest Squiffy, how much did you spend on your home system? You seem to have expensive tastes judging by your recommendations in a lot of threads!

I'd rather not say. But going from personal experience, I would skip the cheap HTIB and go for something with a bit more sound/build/connectivity/upgradbility. You don't need to spend thousands (although it helps) ;) but don't get cheapest of the cheap either.

My dad has Acoustic Solutions "Hi-Fi" and it sounds terrible.

£200 can buy you a HTIB, doesn't mean it's good though.
 
If your spending £200 then I would actually recommend the Tannoy 5.1 FX kit then, I paid around £150 delivered a few years ago. Not sure whether they are around any more though.

On top of that you'll have to look for a second hand AV Amp, not sure what you could get for £50 quid tbh. And then there's the speaker cable to consider :(

"Quality" 5.1 just isn't possible on such a low budget though as said by squiffy.
If it's at all possible don't waste the £200 now and instead save up some more, if I had the space I would be saving myself as top set ups sound :cool:
