Decent winter coat?

that looks nice but something more like a third to half of its price please, as stated I'm walking the dog for a few hours not climbing everest :D

That regatta one I spoke of is on sale at £30 down from £60, which seems a little too cheap, but im definitely not going to spend 180 on one :)

180 is not a lot for a good coat.

Heard the saying you get what you pay for.

I spent 250 on a coat last year and im wearing it again this year.

Do you need the fleece? 3 in 1s are great if you want the fleece and they're a good price, but if you've got your own midlayers, you'll get a better jacket for the same money without the fleece.

Try Go Outdoors if you just want something cheap, or if you fancy a trip out, there's a Regatta store at Cheshire Oaks that had some good deals last time I went.

Or if you want something remotely good then head to Ellis Brigham, Cotswold outdoor, Snow and Rock... OP, best bet is to go and try some on in a real shop and get advice from the shop staff (usually pretty good in the aforementioned three).

EDIT: Just read you weren't going to spend £180 on a jacket, in which case Go outdoors, Millets and Blacks will do you, they do plenty of cheap stuff for just wondering around town. Generally even for a half decent softshell you're really looking at £100+, for a hardshell you're looking for anything between £150 and £300+.

That's right, because none of the forum members are capable of giving the OP anything remotely like good advice

Oh no, we can give him great advice, however it's a jacket for wondering round town not for climbing mountains or a piece of computer hardware... Clothes are best when they fit and look nice for the OP... Usually the only way you'll find that out is by trying them on and looking at them in the flesh.

For English weather?

Get a half decent outer shell thats weatherproof (wind, rain etc), North Face do these well. Then layer up underneath it, we never experience anything like proper cold here so the big coats are an unnecessary expense.

Heard the saying 'A fool and his money are easily parted'?

Depends what they buy. They aren't going to be saying that through chattering/frozen lips as their jacket isn't sufficient...;)

*Not that this is going to be a problem for the majority of the OPs usage, which is why I suggest just going to a shop and seeing what fits and he actually likes the look of.:p

And? No-one has suggested he should buy blindly. He asked for advice - any tool can say 'Go to an outdoor shop'. Not really useful is it?

Nor is the "this is the jacket I bought... I like it..." replies.

I just don't understand why people ask around about basic clothes, especially for specific ones.

Of course it is. A decent jacket will be decent on any one (as in technical function). Fit is a question of the right sizing.

I don't understand why GD users post many of the stupidly basic threads they post, but that's life I suppose.

I didnt see this as a typical gd how do I whipe my butt thread given there is such a wide range of prices with coats that there must be some reasoning behind it! I generally think you're more likely to get decent advise on a forum like this than from a sales monkey doing one day a week trying to push me to the highest margin coat.

My Berghaus gortex jacket is 11 years old now, changed the fleece a couple of times and it has kept me warm and dry in all conditions for this country. Find your nearest Blacks store, they have a 3rd off everything at the moment.

Technical functions of a walking round town jacket?:p

Fit is not just a question of sizing at all, different brands have totally different fit, for example most US brands are much squarer than european brands, so if you're fatter than average a US brand is likely to be a better fit than a european brand (gross generalisation there but hopefuly you get the picture). At least it's not as stupid as "spec me a pair of walking boots..." which are really brand specific.
