Hey guys. Long time no speak. I've got a bit of a predicament. I ordered and specced a new m2 competition which is due at the end of this month. I've paid £1k deposit for the vehichle and is specced upto a littler over 57k (it has almost every option).

Problem is that I'm having cold feet. I've found I'm due to be a father and something with 4 doors would be more convenient. I'm also looking at used m3 competition pack cars and can pick up a car less than a year old with around 5k on the clock for under 45k.

Now, is an m2 worth 12k more than a specced, nearly new m3? Surely not...

I don't mind getting the m2 and keeping it a while but don't want to lose a fortune in depreciation. I've seen m2 competition lease deals floating around at substantially less than I'd be paying on a pcp deal.

So over to you guys ... what would you do? Cancel m2 and swallow the 1k deposit being lost forever and buy an m3?

Or honour the deal and buy the m2?

You will take a bath on a highly specced M2 I suspect and you are right, there are some really compelling lease deals right now on the M2 of sub £400 per month inc VAT.

M2 Comp GFV on PCP deals is alarming. BMW are expecting massive depreciation.

They are lower than the values for the standard M2 when that came out and that was cheaper to begin with.

No guarantee it isnt the same for the M3, but that can't be ordered from factory right now until new model (so used prices possibly inflated atm)? There will be a gap in the used car market in the future.

Thanks for the link. It makes for interesting reading. My gut is telling me I'll lose a tonne of cash on an m2cp specced to the moon. I'm going to cancel it.

I think the lease deals on these right now is the best way to get into one as they are silly cheap if you accept standard spec. Makes no sense to spec a lease car if you can jump on a silly give away short-term lease if you don't do crazy miles. £3500 in and £380 per month is what the deals look like.

+ VAT surely? Otherwise that is remarkably good. £12.2k for an M2C for 2 years?

If my E Class wasn't due next Wednesday I'd be in like Flynn and frankly, I might still be any way for my wife

At £390 on 9+23, that is amazing if you can get away with 6k miles.

I don't think you will definitely lose the deposit. Better to tell dealer soon though.

You shouldn’t lose the deposit.

I had an M2C on order too. It arrived at the dealer and they decided to change the deal on me. I walked away and they gave me the deposit back. With that said, in FL all deposits are refundable by law.

The M2C is a sensational car though, and far far better than the original M2. I’d also say that other than the interior materials, the M2C is also superior to the M3 as a car to drive. If you have requirements for 4 doors though, then that changes things.

The only trouble with 6k p/a and an M3 is it equates 115 miles per week, I’d like to cover that in a weekend in an M3 for the sheer hell of it! :D

M3 if you actually ever want to use the car. I’m sure the M2 would be great, but you’ll soon tire of having no rear doors with a baby. Is this a weekend/I’ve got to escape the crying and the poop car, or a daily driver? I’ve done an embarrassingly low number of miles in my 911 since the child arrived.

Yeh M2 is too small. Might get away with a M4 but the M3 is prob best.

I was ok with the E92 until son was 1yr old. Pretty easy with a older seat you could put him in and then drop it in the back and belt it in.

Now just use the Evoque for family duties.

Really? I managed 4 years failing my 911 with kids and recently moved to an e92 (probably the same size as an m2:D. I am thinking when I get a new car in 4 years it will probably be a new m3, but to say that 2 doors is tough is just another way of saying you're not trying hard enough:p.

The idea is I'll use the car as my main vehicle but I do have use of a works van for commuting, so keeps the miles off my personal car.

Part of me is thinking get something stupid, and just get the missus a new car (she drives a Mini Cooper S right now), so something with 5 doors and then something fun for me (GT4, Exige 380 Sport). The main things is that I don't want to pile money into something that'll sink like the Titanic like my M4 did (£18k in a year).

My GTR actually had some pretty good residuals, but feel like I'd be doing the same thing again and want a change.

The key thing to take away is that I don't necessarily need 4 doors (we can use my partners car for baby duties). GT4 prices are frustratingly holding strong, even although the new one is just round the corner. My friends think I'm insane for considering an Exige for 65k+ but again, prices are very strong.

Kids would be fine. Babies require so much stuff it would seem! We used our fiat 500 for the first 6 months before lifting the car seat in and out started to wear out our backs! Anyway, the convertible nature of my 911 makes it quite easy to lift a baby seat in and out!! The problem is definitely the associated clobber.

@mk1_salami - a new BMW M car would not be my first choice for the best residuals. Use the opportunity to buy something really silly while you have the chance!

Ironically the convertible nature of yours will make it more difficult when there are bigger due to the rear seats being more vertical (i did want to try both kids on the back of a cab but i couldn't justify it).

Test drove a GT4 today at Perth. They had two to choose from ... a Silver non carbon ceramic car and a bright yellow one with ceramics and buckets which was gorgeous. Really enjoyed the test drive, so think I may be buying one.
