My uncle is giving me some of his old vinyl ( dnb / jungle stuff... ), but i have no decks :p

He's giving me his mixer i beleive, so I just need some decks.

Now i have no idea on price ranges, but something below £300, or even £250 if possible, would be preferable.

So what would you reccomend?

Thanks in advance!

If you want to get into dj'ing if you buy some cheap (belt drive) decks it will put you off for life! If you can afford to save an extra £100 the Numark tt500's are good for the price. Otherwise do what andy says and try and get some used 1210's.

anyway technics 1210s are what everyone swears by and what the clubs use so just keep checking ebay for some

Maybe then but not so much anymore. Their certainly decent decks but I've heard a lot about the Stanton ST-150 TT's, iirc they seem to have taken over from Technics as the standard TT's used in clubs and by a lot of home DJ's. Very good decks, so I've heard. Certainly a lot more features than the 1210's.

edit: with regards to the OP's budget. Have a look on: http://www.decks.co.uk/products/decks?reset=1 As said above ^ go for direct drive.

Thanks for the help. I guessed everyone would say 1210's from what i have read on here before.

I'll have a look around for some. It won't be for atleast a month though, as i haven't even started my new job yet. :p

Why is belt driven so poor in comparison with direct drive?

Edit:

Also, what do i need for a setup. I'm assuming an amp isn't a necessity?

If it is I can steal my dad's cambridge one :p

Direct drive motors have much more torque which helps when cueing the record, they also hold the pitch better. You can mix on belt drive decks but it is harder and as soon as you get into it you will want some better decks so it will cost you more money in the long run.

For a basic setup you need two decks, a mixer, some headphones and either powered speakers or an amp and speakers. A lot of people just use the aux input on their hi-fi when starting out.

Thanks for the informative post. =)

Get 1210's. I use them and they are awesome. Really nicely made too.

In fact I might know someone who is selling a pair in Bristol, I think he wants around £400 for a pair... This is a bit higher than your budget tho...

since everyone is into CDs these days 1210s are going dirt cheap.

I also recommend Vestax Pdx2000s, technically a better turntable than the 1210 imo, but some people are just more comfy with 1210s

When I started out I purposefully bought a pair of crappy belt drives for £50 off a mate. After 6 months of being able to mix pretty well on those, it was scarily easy on a pair of direct drives. So, belt drives do come in handy but direct drives are the way to go for sure.

if your going for vinyl then defenatly get some form of direct drives. Alternativly you could buy a nice pair of pioneer cdjs and rip the vinyl to mp3 ;) vinyl is way to expensive these days and tunes are less available as digital takes over.

If you get turntables i think you really need some sort of DVS system (Serato. Torq etc.) I think turntables are coming back in a way. I keep seeing more and more DJs now using 1210's and Serato in the club instead of the CDJ's.

Actually yeah i forgot about Serato scratch live. Bloody awesome bit of kit.

wish i had my decks again to play with it

i was playing with serato all day yesterday and its the dogs nuts. The only thing i missed from my usual traktor+controller or a cdj setup is the ability to loop.

1210's are a thing of the past and only relics clinging on to the dying pride of their long gone hay-day (1972 IIRC and the MK2's in 78) will say 1210's are still the best. If you want to make your vinyl sping then yes 1210's are for you......but if you actually want to do something with the vinyl other than watch it sping and go "ooooooooh" then either TTX's, PDX2000's or ST-150's are for you. There is ofc serato which is bloody awesome but do also come a price. Plus you will still need the actual turn tables :p MSN in trust if you want to talk further :)

P.S. Sorry if I offended any 1210's owners :p
