I normally pay for everything in cash when abroad. The card is for emergencies. It also helps if you spread the items between people to bring it below the £390 threshold.

It is not going to happen with a laptop, but if you are coming back with many smaller value items (less than £390 each) then you can split them up.

Take the CPU out of laptop.

Laptop is no longer functional and therefore is clearly not worth £390...

Give CPU for someone else to take through.

CPU is clearly not worth £390 on it's own.

Why even give the CPU to someone else? Broken laptop is worth next to nothing, CPU is worth a bit but not £390

but you cant take a cpu out of a laptop as they are mostly soldered to the board

Laptop CPU's are not soldered to the board in 99% of cases.
