Deep Fried Mars Bars

I didn't like it when I tried them. I'm not a sweet tooth though, would have preferred battered haggis.

Anyway, isnt the new national dish the Munchy Box with cheese? :p

Is that food? :/

The one that always got me was not the deep fried confectionary but 2 other items that you would regularly see just chucked in the deep fat frier.

One being the Traditional scotch mutton pie and the other being a flakey pastry pasties called briedies.

To watch a Flaky pastry pastie come out of a deep fat frier , pure lard flowing out like rivers can almost clog your arteries by sight alone.

I've never seen a local chippy that does deep fried mars bars (or any other chocolate product), maybe I'm too far north!
Only because you have moved on to deep fried pizzas instead.
Moved on to? They were around decades before the deep fried mars bar was even thought of :p The best deep fried pizzas should be fried without batter though, it's like a lovely chunk of fried bread with cheese and tomato on......yummy.

Haggis supper (salt no vinegar) with a gherkin> anything else to be had from a chippy.

Now I want a haggis pudding supper :( Still, I a have a chicken roasting in the oven so it'll have to wait for another day :)

Why did you have to post that.
Every time I see it I end up texting people looking for a few lads to split the petrol so I can make the nearly 800 mile round trip to buy one, it looks like a dream.

As a Scotsman I would just to like to state that this is not the national dish. I'm getting fed up of being asked about this immediately after discovery of my being Scottish. The deep fried Mars bar was a fad that a few places still do for tourists.

So if you can pass this on that would be lovely!

It apparently started as an urban myth then some people started to believe it and some chip shops started to sell it.

Actually made a few a year or so ago, quite yummy though you can feel the unhealthyness grafting into your body as you eat them, never felt so full/sick with such a small amount of food, if youve got a friend who eats really unhealthly I cant think of a better way to convince them to start eating better than giving them one bite of one. Still if you've got a fryer give it a go at least once as they are strangely tasty, though it totally ruins your oil in the fryer.

As for deep fried pizzas, they are great, as long as they are the proper type; totally battered all over and fried and not just a pizza that is a bit crispy.

Munchie box - contents

Donner meat
Onion Rings
Chicken Pakora - why dont they do this in England?!?
Chips

Sometimes also served with a Fried half Pizza or nan bread.

Chippies in Scotland pretty much deep fry everything - standard list would include

Haggis
White Pudding
Black Pudding
Sausage
Beefburger
Hamburger
King Rib
Fish
Mushrooms
Pizza
Chicken
Pies

When served with chips its known as a Supper.

Suppers should always be coated in salt and sauce ( which for some reason only seems to be easily available in the lothians)

Must always be drunk with Irn Bru from a glass bottle (for those of us living in England you can email barrs and they will send you a list of retailers near to your post code that actually sell Irn Bru in glass bottles)

Also the following is fairly normal to be sold within the chippie:

Nappies
Cat / Dog food
Milk
Cigarettes
Sweets / Crisps
Soft Drinks
Toilet paper
and numerous other essentials.
