Recently I have been watching Deep Space 9 on Virgin 1 and it has reminded me what a brilliant piece of TV it is. Well scripted, well shot and some of the twists and turns in the story line are excellent. The only problem is it takes a hell of a long time to start getting good (read: from Season 4 onwards)

Now I have watched all the other Star Trek series (even some Enterprise, yuck! :( ) and they aren't a patch on Deep Space 9. Even Voyager with its "kind of" ongoing story line just seems to lack the depth that DS9 has.

This made me think of the epic series that was Babylon 5 and I am trying to decide which is better. I think hand on heart Babylon 5 is better but sometimes DS9 gets me with its amazing episodes.

So what do you think is best? If only Babylon 5 had the production quality of DS9. Yeah it is great that B5 has loads of special effects but sometimes the quality of them and the film sucks bad.

So out of the two what is your favourite and why? Or do you have another favourite Sci-fi series and why is it your favourite?

Our Man Bashir.

Silly, and utterly brilliant 60s spy spoof.

Also, the one where they help Vic with the heist at the casino.

What does B5 have to compete? (I've never seen it)

DS9 has some amazing episodes. "In the Pale Moonlight" is my favourite, it's in series 6. Garak is my favourite character, closely followed by Weyoun and Gul Dukat.

Babylon 5 was, IMHO, by far the better series. With one exception, Jadzia Dax.

(falls off chair drooling)

Can anyone explain why she married Worf?

B5 has one of the most planned out story arcs of any scifi series, the whole thing was planned pretty much from begining to end as the first series was being filmed, this IMHO gives it a feel which you don't get from any of the Trek series, it is also ment to be watched as a series and not as stand alone episodes with a hint of sory arc behind them.

Admitedly the special effects haven't stood up quite as well as they could but if you want an emersive series which delivers punchy storylines that are politically astute B5 is a great choice, if all you want is quick fixes then watch some Trek. Don't get me wrong I like both but for me B5 is the hands down winner.

BSG (remake) is for me the natural successor to B5

first of all.. if you look into production..

Star Trek (and Gene Roddenberry) stated for a long time, that people didn't want a 'continuous story arc', and as such the star trek universe resets itself every week. When B5 came along, and from the outset, JMS said that it was going to be a story across 5 years. The next trek to come along was DS9 which started airing a year or so after B5 if I remember, and suddenly, there we have, a pervasive storyline. Why? because B5 proved that it could be done.. Round One to the little guy.

What does B5 have, to compare to the 'brilliant' episodes of DS9? How about Garibaldi's comparing Bester (played by walter 'chekov' koenig) to a pinyata? or Londo molari's hokey pokey... or even Ivanova's sex scene (and I mean the one with the wierd alien that she conned, and not the one with Ms Winters) oh, and of course, many of the scenes with Lennir.

But of course, my favourite conversation has to be between Lyta and Garibaldi. (working from memory here, so forgive errors, but you will get the idea)

Garibaldi - "Just what are you?"
Lyta - "Well, you know how in a war you have lots of little bombs?"
Garibaldi - "er.. yeah"
Lyta - "and you have a few big bombs?"
Garibaldi - "yeah..."
Lyta - "and you have one, really big, universe destroying bomb?"
Garibaldi - "erm.. I guess"
Lyta - "Pleased to meet you Mr Garibaldi"
