Deep Space 9 or Babylon 5? There's only one way to find out...FIGHT!

For Trek DS9 ended up the best series due to them seeing what B5 had done with a story arc planned well in advance and they copied it, as said above. Overall B5 only just edges it for me but not a lot in it as both i could watch again and again, which i tend to do seeing i own both DS9 & B5 on dvd now. I could watch either of these series in the knowledge they are both great and i will not regret watching them.

It is just a pity that JMS had the TV studios mucking him about, as series 4 and 5 of B5 could have been so much better if they didn't have to rush 4 to finish the shadow war off with the threat of cancellation over their heads. Hence series 5 being poor in comparison to the previous 4.

Oh for another JMS B5 related series with a studio brave enough to go ok here is the cash do as you wish we wont muck you about, unfortunately not many in the US would ever take that risk and if they did would cancel it if viewing figures weren't high enough :(

DS9 was by the the best Star Trek series, mainly because it had the only characters that actually developed in the whole franchise, and a semi ongoing storyline.

However B5 wins it hands down, the whole series from start to end was tied together, almost every episode either developed the characters (and their relationships with each other), or added something extra to the story - even the "light" and "standalone" episodes generally had hints of what was going on, or would be going on, and added to the growth of one character or another.
Sometimes it might just be a throwaway comment from one character being directly related to something that happens episodes later - Vir's conversation with Morden where he comments on how one day he'll see Mordon hung up and will wave like "this" (gesturing a very dainty wave), which then happens about 2 seasons later.

Bab5 easily - except for season 5 - could have skipped that entirely.

Bab5 changed the shape of sci-fi for years to come with the multi season story arc - others just copied.

shame that all the spin offs are complete steaming load of crap!

Stuff like that is what makes B5 a legend.

I'd have to say that Firefly is the best Sci-Fi series.

Out of these two, DS9 had some amazing episodes, but B5 is just more consistent.

Firefly is very good, but at one series and a film it is tough to make a fair comparison. For pure one-line comedy River does take some beating. The "I swallowed a bug" line after a chase with the Reavers is fantastic.

I found DS9 the worst Star trek series I've watched, I just couldn't get into it like the others :/

Firefly "Buffy in space" was a diabolical failure

If I was gonna go for greatest Sci-Fi series Ever It'll have to be Doctor Who From the 1st Dr(William Hartnell) - The (present) 10th Dr (David Tennant)

yes, except ds9 started a year earlier, and was infact the first series to do it, other than that you are correct, most sci-fi series after were built around having a ongoing main theme. ds9's main story line was cardassia vs bajor/federation which was there from the first episode to the last, with various sides joining in the fight.

to a certain degree x-files had it to, which also started the year before bab 5, infact it would seem 1993 was the start of that.

lots of sci-fi and non sci-fi shows went the multi series story arc thing after this. NOt many normal series really had a proper developing story line, just characters that developed with single/double episode stories along characters lives.

deep space 9 is better because frankly, babylon 5 had way to many ham actors, and just some not good people in it. Deep space 9 did aswell, but Sisko, Dax, o'brian, bashir and even squishy nose was good, garak, Morn, Quark, narg(nog, nag, no idea how it was spelt) and his dad whose name i can't think of. Had a far larger cast of regulars and more variation in stories, better acting and past a couple years of not great scripting some of really really great series.

The best sci-fi I watch about 18 months ago and I enjoyed it, and thats "Farscape".

Regards

Not the best but I agree Damn good series! Best line is from the Film though
"OK, boy and girls, here are the rules. Find a penny, pick it up. Double it, you got two pennies. Double it again, four. Double it twenty-seven times and you've got a million dollars and the IRS... all over your ass. Round and round and round it goes. Where it stops no one knows. But it all adds up... quick!"

Its brilliant

its brilliant , but did fail massively. Wrong time, i think it was also one of those shows the "higher ups" at the network were unsure of. when that happens it tends to get a crappy airing slot, and sporadic showing. NYPD blue in the states was massively popular, it never got that popular here as they would show a series, one ep, 10pm thursday, not bother showing one for 2 weeks, then whack one in at 1am friday morning, etc. it was simply impossible to keep track of and see them all. so a great series no one saw, same happened to firefly in the states. it failed mostly because they didn't back it with expensive add's and primetime slot. think they never aired all the episodes, only half or so then gave up.

B5 without a doubt - the long buildup to the Shadow War and Kosh's comments "If you go to Za'Ha'Dum You will Die"

Babylon 5 is still the best sci-fi series i've seen. I just wish the DVD box sets lined up better on the shelf.

Deep Space 9 isn't even the best Star Trek series, nevemind trying to take on the mighty B5.

Its brilliant

The acting = Bad if not bordering on diabolical

Malcom Reynolds he is Han Solo they stole the character

The reavers = Zombies

The Story = Ok the bit about and american - oriental government forming believable the rest of it W T F was he & the writers thinking a 5 year old could have come up with a better storyline
