Defunct Game Developers / Studios / Publishers ?

Pretty sure Team17 are still going, they made the worms series correct?

Yes, still going, they released Worms: Reloaded a year or so ago.

You mean they bought teams of devs to make games for them. ;)

I'm hardcore, I still remember the days of hl2-hate.

They became popular and rich, and thus expanded like all game companies do. Whether Gabe codes an entire game himself, or hires a bunch of people to do it for him, what does it matter?

People can hate HL2 all they want, but it was hugely successful.

Couple I don't think were mentioned yet:

Troika: Ex Fallout1/2 devs who made Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines

Sir-Tech: Wizardry / Jagged Alliance games

Black Isle Studios:
Planescape: Torment
Fallout 2
Icewind Dale Series

This, Bullfrog and Sierra (mainly for the Space quest series, kinda sad story how they ended up going out).

I remember playing a ton of Apogee games when I was a lot younger too, pretty sure they've vanished? Microprose and Ocean also had many games I was fond of :(

Looking Glass, Black Isle et al, all dearly missed. Still regularly play their games to this day and will for many, many years to come.

Paradroid deserves a remake methinks :) surely theres some indie game of it hiding somewhere...

Anyone remember Mastertronic? They had some class games as well in the 8bit era.

What, like this one? :)

I certainly do. I remember when we had a C64, probably something like half our games collection were made up of those £1.99 and £2.99 Mastertronic games. :)

Chris Sawyer. Seems to have been inactive for serveral years now. The guy responsible for Transport Tycoon (and its successor, Locomotion) and Rollercoaster Tycoon 1 and 2.

Ensemble, before Microsoft ate them, for all the Age of Empires / Mythology games.

I guess you could also say Acclaim, they were a major publisher which are now gone.

Psygnosis - They are not the same since Sony downsized them and they are now SCE, they did release a lot of great games before and for a few years after Sony aquired the studio.. Now, Wipeout is about all you get fromt them. shame..

Ah, Psygnosis. They were a rare studio. Not only were almost all of their games brilliant, but they were constantly pushing the boundaries of what you could do with graphics too.

Yes they were. Back in the Amiga days they released a lot of side scrolling games that pushed the hardware each time... Looked graphically excellent for the time, well produced games.

Sony owe much of their success with the Playstation to Psygnosis, they released some of the better Ps1 games back in the day..

Destruction Derby
F1
Wipeout
G Police

Psygnosis also released what is considered to be the first 'real' CD based game (I think if I'm correct)

Microcosm - CD32

Such a good studio, Sony took good advantage of them and now sadly they are a shadow of their former selfs...

Delphine Software. Remember some quality point and click adventures.

Westwood. Enjoyed their CRPG's before they turned in to a C&C conveyer belt.

Heuristic Park. Not tried all their games, but Wizards & Warriors was engrossing and a good distraction from MMORPG's of the time.
