Dehumidifiers

I already have one which runs constantly in a room with a piano in it. My house is generally damp as it has solid walls and I'm having problems in the rest of the house due to the wet weather. As a result I bought a new, more powerful one that B&Q have just started doing apparently. It's supposed to be able to produce up to a huge 60 litres a day so I'm expecting it to be very effective hopefully. The only issue is that's it's a bit loud on the highest setting but if it cuts down on mould and other effects of damp, it's worth it :)

Hahaha, for some reason if when anyone mentions dehumidifiers (?) i always think of the episode of friends with ross and his one.

If you don't know what im talking about you're either old or not cool.

Which one did you buy please? Cost? My house has solid stone walls and suffers from Mould etc. Thanks

It was the B&Q AirForce 60 litre a day one at £200. There's a 30 litre one at £180 and a 20 litre one at £150. I just thought the 60 litre one was the best value for money option.

It's been running for around 4 hours and the tank is already a third full and that's with my other dehumidifier running downstairs in the music room

The other one is an Amcor branded one from B&Q as well and is a 15 litre per day with 4.5 litre tank and built-in heater. It's been very reliable for the past year or so having been run constantly to protect my piano from the damp. I've just switched off the new 60 litre a day unit and the water tank is over three-quarters full after less than 8 hours though we did have some washing drying on the radiators too and I have a very large marine aquarium in one of my rooms.

Thanks for info. I may take the one i have now back to B&Q as it does give off a strange smell. Been running for a couple of days now, on and off. It is a noncompressor type. Not a lot of water from it.

I'm not surprised. I didn't want to say anything earlier because you'd already bought one but I don't rate the dessicant ones at all. Take it back and get the real thing.

Ah well, back to the drawing board! The Dehumidifier i bought yesterday (Compressor Type) is just too noisy!! Its going back today. I will have a look at the other ones they have. Seen one with a large tank and just a dial on it. Might try that one?

Thats why the dessicant ones are better then the compressor types. They can also work at lower temps, and I think they use less energy.

Took the Dehumidifier back. Might get the Dessicant one instead. It did have a smell coming from it but that may go in time?

Didn't it have a lower fan setting or was that too noisy as well?

Perhaps all that is true, however, a compressor type is much more efficient and much more effective. Anyway, surely a dessicant one has a fan? Isn't that noisy too?

The One i just took back was way too loud even on low setting. The Compressor would kick in now and again and it was really loud!

The Dessicant one does have a fan and on low it is not too bad. At least you don't have the compressor kicking in!

That's odd. I have mine upstairs on the landing, and we can't hear it from the living room. At night we shut it off so we don't hear it at night. When you first start running it, it runs a lot but once it has dried the rooms out, it runs a lot less. Perhaps that's the problem, that yours was running all the time because it had a lot of moisture to remove.

If you sleep in the same room as the unit with it switched on, I would understand your problem.

What happens to a dessicant based unit when the dessicant has reached maximum saturation and surely the efficacy drastically reduces the closer it gets to saturation point anyway? A compressor based unit doesn't suffer from this problem of course.

Just seen the same model I mentioned/have, at B&Q with a different name on the front, "airforce" or something. Going for £99, just incase anyone was interested in that model. ;)
