It's called Ki-Hap, in Korean it means "Power Shout" and yeah it works, i've seen a master who can ring bells with it.

It works on the principal that humans consist of a lot of water and the sound waves given out by tuning your Kihap to a certain frequency and emitted at a certain volume will disturb this water inside us and cause your body to freak out.

I practice Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial art and have done for about 13 years now and I only use my Kihap as a first attack, basically shouting in a way that shocks your attacker, enough to make their subconcious mind tell their body to freeze and plant both feet on the floor (much like if somebody scares you and makes you jump), then you have to be quick and follow up with a physical technique.

There's a lot of scepticism about Martial Arts and the "mystical" things that go on, but truthfully most of it is common sense.

I'll write more later, but i've gotta go out now :p

The 'shout' is called kiai in Japanese martial arts (kihap in Korean).
In some Chinese martial arts the different sounds are believed to stimulate the chi in different organs , to strengthen the practioner or possibly to hurt or distract the opponent. That's why they make those strange yelps etc in Kung Fu movies.
I've seen the Shaolin monks use the technique when demonstrating their 'iron shirt' or endurance skills.

I was watching that martial arts thing on sky where the english dude goes round asia seeing all these different martial arts masters.

One stuck in my mind, it was the art of using your voice to disable your opponent. Apparently the master before the current one could kill small birds just by 'shouting'.

The master refrains from using this technique on someone more than two times a day (or was it week) for fear of internal injuries. He can also ring a bell just by 'shouting' at it.

Has anyone heard of this, or know its name, and whether its a load of rubbish or not?

It sounds pretty cool if it is real. They said on the show that it was a secret Samurai 'weapon'/technique

i couldnt find anything on google... :(

The guy may have been Grandmaster Hatsumi of the Bujinkan Budo Ninja dojo. Apparently, he has mastered the use of kiai to disable opponents.

I train 3 times a week and teach 3 times a week but I don't practice every day (however i suppose my schedule only leaves me 1 totally free day lol).

I love it, it's not a chore to train and obviously i keeps me fit.

With regards to killing small birds, that kinda goes against the martial arts way of upholding peace and harmony (no, it's not all about kicking ass!), but I suppose it wouldnt be that hard. Think about how susceptable the little birds would be to shock...give them a big enough fright and their little hearts wouldnt be able to cope.

I'm a firm believer in Kihap (purely from a scientific perspective) and also Chi energy.

As I said earlier, there's a lot of sensationalist BS that surrounds martial arts, strip away the crap and you realise that a lot of it makes sense - such as Chi energy actually being the elecromagnetic pulses that travel around your body (medically proven).

And btw...Kung Fu noises in movies are fake and PURELY for the films. Watch Bruce Lee train...he NEVER makes those chicken sounds.

Yawn! ...... as an ex pro opera singer/vocal trainer ..... I call BS!

Not a chance that the voice can "harm/kill" ..... and I've heard some pretty awesome voices, I can tell you.

I'm very sceptical about things such as eseterics etc, but I think the only way you can even begin to be able to understand these things is witnessing them first hand.

No, but dead men don't train either ;).

Exactly otherwise if you went to a concert you would drop dead. Soundwaves from someone shouting don't do anything to the body. Common sense should be applied in these situations.

True, unless this guy's hitting 2.4Ghz, and I doubt it. One possibility is that he's turned himself into a glorified airzooka :p.
