The scientist/media whore you're thinking of is Captain Cyborg himself, Prof. Kevin Warwick from the University of Reading. You can't really call the internet a machine imo - it's a set of machines connected together to make a network. You wouldn't call a factory a machine would you?

The Internet probably couldnt be turned off entirely, but you could severely limit it quite easily. Cut international data connections, turn off the major routing providers and ISPs.

I was expecting this thread to actually be about EMP. If a nuke of significant size was ever detonated, the EMP would knock out all of the electrical equipment and the Internet would be rather far off from accessible.

Exactly. It might be a bit of a logistical operation to turn off the net, but if it suddenly gained sentience and started attacking us, I think we'd get a bit of motivation.

Now I now this all sounds very like the Terminator films (particularly the third film) but this then got me thinking do the US (& maybe UK, France etc..) have their Nuclear arsenals connected to the internet in some way as this does scare me if its the case as I know they'd be hidden behind multiple firewalls and other security measures but surely nothing other than 100% disjointed network for the military is safe enough?

Anyone know anything on this subject?

Of course nuclear arsenals are on the internet, how else would they get Windows Security updates? Fortunately for us, they run on Windows ME, and can be accessed by the username and password administrator/admin login so we can at least log in and have a play.

Luckily for us civilised folks in the Western world though, the Chinese Army's cyberterror unit hasn't as of yet been able to launch any Nukes at us because the servers keep crashing.
