They should have a relatively flat frequency response. That is the main thing monitors should have. They also tend to be a bit tougher and will take pops and noises more readily since they occur frequently in studios. Monitors are often specified as near-field, this means they arn't as effective if you are situated a long way from them, but I doubt this is any different to most Hi-Fi speakers (floorstanders less so). I think it's mostly to do with that flat response, being further away lets the room alter the sound more.

Don't know what other models you've looked at, but the Tapco S8s are a similar price and feature an 8" woofer for further extended bass if that appeals to you.

It just means that all frequencies should be presented at the same level, rather than there being peaks at certain frequencies. If you look at the frequency response graph (frequency against sound pressure F/dB), it should be a fairly flat line across the range. In terms of how it sounds, it is usually desireable to have it fairly flat, but it won't have any particular tone or character :)

I would have "guessed" the B2's and the Marantz amp would sound better, £279 for the "Monitors".... which is like buying a pair of speaker, active crossovers and four mono powers amps is pushing your luck..... But then I've not heard them either....
"Flat frequency response" would also be the goal of normal HiFi speakers as well...The only difference in this example, is the use of active crossovers and not passive, as in the B2's, as this *can* allow greater frequency shaping and correction, IF designed properly and the designer has bother.... At this price point I'd be cautious.
Might be better to look for some second hand Dynaudio active monitors, often found on an auction site. BM5A I think is the model number.... These would be a much more serious piece of kit IMO.

The amps are internal, he's just pointing out that your paying a moderate amount of cash for a lot of stuff so shouldn't expect miracles. I'm really not sure if they'd be better either. I was looking at monitors but settled on Hi-Fi in the end :)
