They should have a relatively flat frequency response. That is the main thing monitors should have. They also tend to be a bit tougher and will take pops and noises more readily since they occur frequently in studios. Monitors are often specified as near-field, this means they arn't as effective if you are situated a long way from them, but I doubt this is any different to most Hi-Fi speakers (floorstanders less so). I think it's mostly to do with that flat response, being further away lets the room alter the sound more.
Don't know what other models you've looked at, but the Tapco S8s are a similar price and feature an 8" woofer for further extended bass if that appeals to you.
