I've just started reading the first Song of Ice and Fire book and I'm absolutely loving it, but I don't know whether to keep reading it now :( I hate reading a series that is unfinished (especially as there seems to be some doubt as to whether this will ever be finished, I hear the latest books been delayed multiple times?)

It's worth persevering as far as the end of book three (be aware that in paperback this was published as two volumes). At this point there was supposed to be a gap in the story chronology of about five years, before the last two volumes. The current volume four, and the soon to be released volume five, were then written to fill this gap after fan complaints. But it means that book three does come to a conclusion of sorts. But only of sorts, and not a very nice one for most people in it.

Yup you might as well read the first 3. Up to you whether you read the 4th, it's not finished yet but it's gotta be close. It was 5 years between 3 and 4, and now we're 5 years after 4 :/ One hopes, anyway.

I started Wheel of Time last night but i cant seem to pick it up again.

is it worth the endurance? i loved Song of Ice and Fire, and was loking for more along those lines.

I finished the first book, but honestly it drove me to tears. I think its possibly one of those marmite series, you love or you hate the writing style, and unfortunately I hit the latter. I'd say pick it up again and at least try and make it a decent chunk of the way through the book though just to find out whether it grows on you :)

anyone looking for a new fantasy novel/series should try the Dwarves novels by markus Heitz, i just finished the 2nd and thoroughly enjoyed them both.

For those interested, George R R Martin's 5th book, A Dance with Dragons, has a pencilled release date for 30th September this year according to Amazon, but nothing on his site.

Don't get too excited - it's been listed on Amazon for the last three years at least with a constantly changing release date.

Sorry to burst the bubble :S

Like you I started reading the Song of Fire & Ice series - I'm just about to start A Feast for Crows. Great news that the first book is being made into a HBO series. Really looking forward to reading the 4th and 5th books.

I would say though that the series is just edged out of my top two books by Lord of the Rings and The Magician.

Icidentely a large high street book store has just started do 3 for 2 on all paper backs :D

Of all the fantasy series I have read the books I always end up going back to are:

The Wheel of Time by Robert jordan. Yes the earlier books are better but I never lost faith with Jordan and enjoyed everyone of his books. Sanderson did a reasonable job with the latest book but it didn't have Jordans polish in my opnion.

A Song of Ice and Fire by George R. R. Martin. It's been a massive wait but the next book should be out later this year and I'm sure it will be as good as the rest. Brilliant books.

A Tale of the Malazan Book of the Fallen by Steven Erikson. Another series with massive scope and lots of nice ideas. Can be very confusing though but ultimately rewarding. Ian C. Esslemont's related books are also quite good.

This would be my response. The above 3 authors define how good fantasy writing can be. They all slightly differ in their focus but all 3 series are pretty damn perfect.

I couldn't pick a favourite, but personally I find to the world at large Erikson is underated amongst the three. My advice would be to read his books!!!!! At times they are frustrating, not every question has an answer, but for pure scope and the epic nature of what he undertakes it is breathtaking. His characters always stir a response and the stories are strong. I can honestly say Deadhouse Gates by Erikson is the BEST fantasy novel I have ever had the pleasure of Reading. The ending left me so stunned I don't think I have ever been so affected by a book as this before in my life.

A Song of Ice and Fire sound great, shall be getting these.

Got waterstones vouchers for xmas and bought the lot "written so far" and then read them all one straight after the other. The characters and the depth are awesome I felt like i knew some of them or wanted to know them, loved the unpredictability of his writing style at times it just made me go "no way" out loud and i'd find myself jumping back a few chapters to make sure what he'd just written had actualy happend :)

Can't wait to read the next one when it's done, but will proberly have to re-read the last book again just to get a hold of the loose threads of where the characters stories are going .. Brillient !

I still haven't read the last book yet, it had been so long I'd kind of forgotten what was happening. I'm going to have to read the whole lot again!
